My kid’s away in Washington for college, and last week he got ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt. I’m wondering how much this will cost me. How much is a seatbelt ticket in Washington state?

Washington takes seatbelt violations more seriously than some states. Failure to wear a seatbelt or proper restraint in Washington can result in a $124 traffic ticket!
Under Washington law, everyone in a moving vehicle must have a seatbelt or a properly fitting child restraint. Everyone over 16 is responsible for tickets issued for their own violations. But the driver will bear the brunt of the responsibility—and the fines—for anyone younger than 16 without an appropriate safety restraint.
Here are a few more things to know about seatbelt laws in Washington:
- It’s a primary offense, which means you can be pulled over and ticketed solely for a seatbelt violation.
- Washington state does not use a points system for traffic violations.
- State law prohibits car insurance companies from being informed of seatbelt violations.
