The 2023 Toyota 4Runner comes standard with two rows of seating for up to five passengers, but a third row of seating is available that adds an extra two seats.
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner offers plenty of SUV capability with the option of either two or three rows of seating. It’s also available with all-wheel drive (AWD). Unlike the Toyota Highlander
, which is a midsize crossover, the 4Runner is a more traditional SUV. It’s also only available with a fully gas-powered engine, while the Highlander offers a hybrid option. The seating options for the 2023 4Runner are a bit hard to keep track of—not every trim actually has the third row available to add on.

How many seats does the 2023 Toyota 4Runner have?
Standard seating capacity for a 2023 Toyota 4Runner is five. However, you can purchase third-row packages which raise this capacity to seven. The third row is not available on any of the TRD 4Runner trims and not available for the 40th Anniversary Special Edition.
The extra seats go into the back, while the middle row remains a three-seat row that can fold down to provide access to the rear seating. Third row seating costs a minimum of $805 extra.
Do all 4Runners have three rows of seats?
No. A 2023 Toyota 4Runner will only come with five seats unless you purchase a Third Row Seating Package. These packages are only available for SR5
, SR5 Premium
, and Limited
trims. Unfortunately, the 4Runner’s third row of seating is best for kids, as it offers quite a bit less space than the other two rows. Passengers in a 4Runner’s optional third row will have 29.3 inches of legroom, which is slightly more than in the Highlander.

2023 Toyota 4Runner interior
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner has been criticized for its less than up-to-date interior. Materials used for the walls and trim look cheap at lower trims, but the interior is nothing if not functional.
First and second rows are spacious enough, but the third row is definitely cramped—not somewhere you’d want to make your adult friends sit. Cargo capacity behind all three seats is also less than what you’d get from the trunk of a Toyota Corolla
. Dimensions
Let’s take a look at how much room there really is in a 2023 Toyota 4Runner.

Cargo space
Cargo space becomes quite limited in the Toyota 4Runner if you have all three rows of seating up, but if you fold down all the rear seats, there’s a respectable 89.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo space available.
With the second row occupied with passengers, this number is reduced to 47.2 cubic feet. And unfortunately, with all 7 seats occupied, there’s only 9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row.
If you look at the Kia Telluride
, arguably the 4Runner’s top competitor, you’ll notice that there’s still a healthy 21 cubic feet behind the third row (which is included as standard equipment). Not only this, but the 4Runner has a starting price that’s nearly $5,000 higher than the Telluride. Which Toyota vehicles can seat eight people?
You won’t be able to fit eight people in any 2023 Toyota 4Runner, but there are three Toyota models that will seat up to 8 people if you choose the right configurations.
The Toyota Sienna
minivan seats seven or eight. The standard LE
model already comes with eight seats at no extra charge, but upgrade trims replace the middle row with 2 captain’s chairs, reducing seating capacity to seven. The Sienna also somes with a hybrid powertrain that gets 36 mpg combined fuel economy, unlike the 4Runner, whose only engine option gets 19 mpg. Another option is the full-size Toyota Sequoia
, which comes standard as a three-row SUV. Like the Sienna, higher trims put more comfortable captain seats in the middle row, sacrificing one seat’s-worth of passenger capacity, but the base trim has two rows of three seats. Even adults will find the third row of seating fairly comfortable in the Sequoia. If you don’t need a big, dedicated SUV, you could opt for the Toyota Highlander
midsize crossover, whose lower trims also seat up to 8 passengers. However, the third row of seating on the Highlander will not be comfortable enough for most adult passengers. How to save on Toyota 4Runner insurance costs
The Toyota 4Runner will provide enough seating for a larger family with small children if it’s equipped with the optional third row of seating, while Toyota’s larger options can seat more people more comfortably.
