How do you open the gas tank on a BMW 428i?

I just got a used 2016 BMW 428i, and I’m trying to figure out how to open the gas tank so I can fill it up and hit the road. My old car had a lever inside, but I can’t find one here. How do I open the fuel tank door?

Great question! You’re right; most new BMWs don’t have a lever to open the gas tank, so you won’t find one inside the car! To open the gas tank on a
BMW 428i
, get out of the vehicle and press the edge of the fuel tank door on the exterior of the car.
Here’s how to do it:
  • Ensure the car is turned off and the doors are unlocked.
  • Gently press the left edge of the fuel tank door to open it.
  • Once the door is open, unscrew the cap by turning it counterclockwise and pulling it out to remove it.
  • Place the cap in the holder slot on the fuel tank door for convenience.
When you’re done filling up your car, replace the fuel tank cap by turning it clockwise until you hear a click signaling it’s back in place. Gently close the fuel door and secure it with a light push.
When filling up your BMW, consider using premium fuel. Although more expensive, premium gas may be worth the price. Because BMW is a luxury performance car brand, choosing premium over regular unleaded can improve acceleration and engine performance.
That said, most engines are equipped to run on regular gasoline, so unless specified in your owner’s manual, you can
save money on car expenses
by choosing regular gas.
