Great question—as helpful as Google Assistant can be, you don’t always need driving mode on when you’re in the car. Fortunately, it’s a simple fix.
Google’s driving mode replaces your Android’s usual interface with one that’s supposed to be easier to see and use while driving. There’s a setting in Google Maps
that tells your phone to go into driving mode whenever it connects to your car’s Bluetooth. If your phone launches driving mode every time you’re in your car, this setting is probably the culprit. Here’s how to turn off driving mode on Google Maps:
Click on the icon in the top right.
Select “settings” from the menu.
Select “navigation settings.”
Select “Google Assistant settings” to manage driving mode.
From here, you should be able to choose when your car goes into driving mode. Under “When connected to car’s Bluetooth,” make sure “Launch driving mode” is not selected. As an alternative, your phone can either ask you before launching into driving mode, or it can do nothing.
If your phone has been asking to launch driving mode whenever it detects driving, you can turn off this feature from the Google Assistant settings page as well.
