How do I read my car insurance policy?

I received my car insurance policy, but it's filled with legal terms and jargon. I'm good with cars, but not so much with paperwork! How can I read this so that I can understand the important parts?

“That’s a good question—and a very common issue! Instead of poring over your entire car insurance policy, the best way to understand your coverage and policy is to read the
declarations page
and the accompanying glossary or definitions sections.
The declarations page is a simple breakdown of your car insurance policy in an easy-to-read format, containing basic information such as:
  • Policy number
  • Term of the policy
  • Who is insured
  • Policy limits and deductible
  • Premium per period (monthly, biannually, or yearly)
If you’re unhappy with your policy once you’ve read it over, you can always try shopping around for a new one. For the best deal on the coverage you need, check out the
Jerry
app—we’ll get you dozens of customized quotes so that all you have to do is choose the plan you prefer. Once you choose, we’ll even help you switch, so we can take care of the legal jargon while you just focus on the road!
Happy reading!”
