How do I make a counteroffer for a car insurance settlement?

I just got an offer from my insurance company to cover damages from a recent accident, but the number is too low. What steps should I take to make a counteroffer for their car insurance settlement proposal?

Dealing with insurance companies can be stressful, especially when you need to file a big claim. But the key to working with them is staying calm and taking the process one step at a time. If you received too low a settlement offer from your insurance provider, write them a counteroffer in the form of a letter that includes:
  • A clear statement that the offer is unacceptable
  • An argument against any inaccuracies in the
    adjuster’s
    letter
  • An acceptable settlement amount
  • An explanation as to why your offer is more appropriate
  • Evidence of any special damages (such as receipts, bills, work absences, and medical diagnoses)
If you feel unprepared to handle the process yourself, consider
hiring an insurance lawyer
to guide you through the process.
