What’s the best year for a used Porsche Boxster?

I’ve been in love with Porsches since childhood, and now I’m finally going to buy one. I’m looking at the Porsche Boxster, but shopping for one is confusing. What’s a 986? Why is the 718 newer but has a smaller number? And what’s the best year for a used Porsche Boxster?

Yes, buying a Porsche can be confusing. Their naming conventions lack well conventions. But we’ll explain some of it here, and help you find the best year for a used Porsche Boxster based on what you’re looking to spend.
To date, there have been four generations of Porsche Boxsters. Or five? Yeah, like you said it’s confusing. And the numbers attached to the name are internal and aren’t in order, which makes it even trickier.
The first generation Porsche Boxster 986 models, produced from 1996 to 2004, are the cheapest options. This first generation lacked the power of later models, and can be hit or miss with mechanical issues. They’re also older, so expect higher mileage and an appropriate level of wear and tear, too.
The second generation Porsche Boxster 987 was produced from 2005 to 2012, but underwent a refresh in 2009, so you might see this generation referred to as 987.1 (2005 to 2008) and 987.2 (2009 to 2012).
The third generation went crazy with the numbers: these 2012 to 2016 Porsche Boxster models use the “981” designation. And last but not least, the current generation 2017+ Porsche Boxster uses “718” as its designation.
Many Porsche purists say 2011 and 2012 are the best years for used Porsche Boxsters. The first generation’s engine troubles were solved in this second generation, and the 987.2 refreshes included higher displacement and better overall performance.
If you’re looking for the growling flat six sound, we’d recommend the 2012 Porsche Boxster. If you’re more concerned with performance or modern features and your budget allows it, look for a current-generation 2017 to 2022 Porsche Boxster 718.
