How do I fix the AC in my car if it’s not blowing cold air?

The last few times I’ve been in my car, I’ve turned on the air conditioner and only hot air blows out. What can I do to fix the problem?

Car air conditioners can break down over time, so there are several reasons why your air conditioner isn’t blowing cold air. Before you have a literal meltdown, go through all of these possibilities to fix the issue.
First, the problem could be simple: you simply aren’t driving long enough for the air conditioner to cool, especially if temperatures outside have hit triple digits.
If that’s not the case, your AC is probably suffering from one of the following:
  • The air conditioner refrigerant needs a recharge
  • Your air conditioner fan has failed
  • The air conditioner system has a leak
While you probably can’t diagnose the need for a recharge, even novice mechanics can diagnose the other two. If you turn your AC on and don’t hear the fan, your blower motor has probably given out.
In the case of a leak, turn your car on and let the air conditioner run. If the refrigerant is leaking, you should see a greasy liquid.
By making your air conditioner part of your
basic maintenance schedule
, you can avoid any mishaps in the future.
Some car warranties may cover your AC if it goes kaput, so check out either your manufacturers or extended warranty.
