How can I tell if a car’s insured?
How can I check to see if a car is insured? I’m not sure if my car is insured or not and I’m nervous about being pulled over and finding out the hard way.

It’s smart of you to check on your car, especially if you’re not sure if you’re covered.
Here’s how you can tell if a car is insured:
- Review your bank statements: If you can’t remember if you’re insured, your wallet will. If you have monthly payments set up, then you should be able to see your payment withdrawals on your bank statement.
- Look in your car: If you paid up front and in full, then your registration might be the easiest way to find out if you’re covered. Many states list your insurance carrier and your policy number on your vehicle’s registration.
- Search your car: Your insurance card might just be under your nose. If you haven’t already, check the visor, the center console, and the glove box for your insurance card. Drivers commonly store insurance documents in these places since it’s illegal in most states to drive withoutproof of insuranceon hand.
- Visit your local DMV: Many states require insurance companies to keep them informed about auto insurance policy changes, so the DMV should be able to help you.
- Call the secretary of state: The secretary of state’s office usually tracks car insurance coverage and some states, like Texas, even track your policy to make sure it’s up to date.
