How can I stop my car windows from steaming up?
Now that the weather is getting cold again, I’m having trouble keeping my car windows from steaming up. What's the best way to prevent windows from fogging?

Steamy car windows are not only extremely annoying, they can also pose a hazard by limiting visibility.
To stop car windows from steaming up:
- Turn on the air conditioner or the heater. Either one will help remove the moisture inside the car and even out the temperature near the windows. The air conditioner is more effective, but the heat may be the most comfortable option if it’s already cold outside.
Be sure to avoid using the recirculation setting. This will actually contribute to your windows fogging up by keeping the moisture trapped in the car. If you’re not sure what this setting looks like on your vehicle, it will usually show up as an icon of a car with a rounded arrow inside of it.
- Open the windows. If weather permits, opening the windows will allow fresh air to circulate and keep passengers’ breath contributing to the moisture inside the car. Plus, this method won’t use up as much gas as turning on the AC does.
- Don’t wipe your windows. If you do, it will only solve your visibility problem for about 30 seconds before steam collects on your windows again. And when it comes back, it’s even more noticeable due to the streaks you’ve just added, so always avoid wiping the windows.
If you are consistently having problems with your windows steaming up, here are some ways you can prevent the issue:
- Clean all of your windows
- Remove damp items from the car
- Use a silica dehumidifier
- Fill a pair of tights with clean cat litter and place them in the car
- Apply an anti-fogging agent to windows
It may take more than one solution to clear your foggy car windows. Although it can be frustrating, it’s important to take care of the issue for safety reasons.
