Does renters insurance cover early lease termination?

I broke up with my boyfriend, and I’m looking for a new apartment. Does my renters insurance cover an early lease termination?

I’m very sorry to hear about your breakup, and I hope you can find a new apartment soon! Unfortunately, it’s not likely your
renters insurance
policy will cover a lease termination.
Standard renters insurance policies typically have these three coverages:
  • Personal liability: Covers damage to someone else’s property or someone’s medical expenses if you are responsible for the damage or injuries.
  • Personal property: Covers costs of repairs or replacements for personal belongings.
  • Additional living expenses: Pays for additional expenses like a hotel or food delivery if your home is so damaged you cannot stay there.
While these are great coverages, your renters insurance likely will not cover any fees or penalties that usually come with early lease termination. It cannot cover the direct consequences of breaking the lease early, but renters insurance does cover moving. All you have to do is call your insurance carrier to tell them you’re moving, and your policy will follow you to your new home.
