Can you take a rental car to Mexico?

I want to take a trip to Mexico, but would like to drive. I don't own a car. Could I rent a car?

“That’s quite the loaded question, simply because of the answer: maybe.
For example, both Avis and Budget allow travel to Mexico, but only if you are a U.S. resident, renting from a specific location, or possibly, have a corporate account.
In almost every case, the branches of car rental companies that allow you to travel to Mexico are within a reasonable distance of the U.S.-Mexico border. If you’re in Milwaukee and get the urge for authentic tacos and sombreros, chances are the rental car company will not accommodate this request.
If you are set on trying to rent a car to travel to Mexico, you’ll need to shop around with different companies to determine if you’re eligible. Be transparent and honest with the rental car companies before renting a vehicle. You could face serious consequences if you take a rental car into Mexico without approval.
If you travel frequently across the border to Mexico and you don’t own a car, you may want to consider a
non-owner car insurance
policy coupled with Mexican auto insurance.
