Can You Sign Two Leases At Once?

There’s an apartment that I want to rent, and the landlord just emailed that I was approved for it. But she wants someone to move in right away and my current lease doesn’t expire for another three months. Can I start a new lease before my old one is finished?

Yes—you can sign two leases at once! No actual rules or laws limit how many active leases you can have at one time.
Of course, just because you can, that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a great idea. Keep in mind that signing a new lease won’t nullify your current one—you’ll be responsible for paying both rents simultaneously.
You should be sure that you can afford to pay both rents before you sign the second lease—if you fall behind on the payments for one, you could face eviction or even a lawsuit.
