Can you get a truck driving job with a felony?

My friend is having a hard time finding a job due to the felony on his record. He’s cleaned up his act and wants to move forward with his life. He’s always liked driving and I think he’d make a good trucker. Can you get a truck driving job with a felony?

Sorry to hear your friend is having such a hard time finding a job.
The good news is that, yes, you may be able to get a truck driving job with a felony.
Each trucking company has their own set of rules and policies regarding hiring drivers with criminal backgrounds. So, it will depend on your friend’s situation, the type of felony, and the companies to which he applies. Some carriers hire felons fresh out of prison, but others will only hire felons who have been out of prison a minimum of five to 10 years.
For anyone, the first step to becoming a truck driver is to get a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). There are certain driving felonies, however, that bar you from getting a CDL at the federal level including:
  • Reckless driving that results in someone’s death or vehicular manslaughter in the first or second degree
  • Using a commercial vehicle to commit a felony
  • Misconduct with a motor vehicle, such as
    road rage
Other felonies likely to disqualify a candidate include:
  • Kidnapping
  • Extortion
  • Arson
  • Assault with intent to murder
  • Bribery
  • Treason
Generally, if your friend hasn’t committed any of the above, he’s likely eligible to earn his CDL and get a job as a trucker. However, states also have their own stipulations, so he should look into the restrictions in his state, too.
