Can I purchase an auto insurance policy before I get a car?

It's been a few months since I've had a car and my insurance policy lapsed. Can I restart it before I find a new vehicle to make sure I'm covered?

“Yes! You can get car insurance before buying a car to make sure you are covered on your first drive.
Before you can signup for insurance, you’ll need to get some specific information to give to your insurance company first.
Start by choosing a vehicle and contacting or visit the dealership. You’ll want to set up a time to make the purchase, and during this process get more information about vehicle specifics that your insurance company will need to create a policy, such as:
  • the VIN (vehicle identification number)
  • current odometer reading
  • model and trim
It can also be helpful–though not required–to get a CARFAX or similar vehicle history report to make sure you know of any issues or accidents before purchase if you’re buying a used vehicle.
Your chosen insurance company will provide a quote after you give them the above vehicle information.
You will want to bring proof of your new insurance policy to the dealership with you when picking up your new car. The dealership won’t let you drive the car off the lot without insurance.
