My husband just bought me a brand-new Impreza, and I’m so excited! We live in a big city, so I’m looking forward to having a rear backup camera. How do backup cameras work?

Typically, you will need to shift into reverse (the gear labeled R) to turn on the checkup camera while driving the rear camera. However, you can try these steps to use your backup camera while driving forward:
Step 1: You’ll need to turn your audio off in most models.
Step 2: Go into your System Diagnostic menu. Consult your specific model’s owner’s manual for proper instruction.
Step 3: Look for an option in this menu that allows you to adjust the rearview guidance lines. These are the green, yellow, and red lines that you see on your backup camera.
Step 4: Don’t do anything! Your rearview camera should remain on as long as you don’t adjust the lines or press “OK”.
Keep in mind: Do not attempt to turn on your backup camera while your car is in motion. These steps can get complicated and lead to distracted driving if you aren’t careful.
The rear camera will show you an image of what’s behind your vehicle—but it will also often include clearance indicators and the like to make parking (and parallel parking) easier.
