Can I drive my ATV on public streets?

Are ATVs street legal? I have my 4x4 fully insured and registered in South Dakota. I plan on riding with a helmet and pad to be as safe as possible. Is there anything else I need to do before I take it out on public roads?

“You are in luck!
South Dakota
is one of the few states that allows ATVs on public roads. However, ATVs are never allowed on the interstate!.
The first step to getting out on public roads is to make sure your ATV is registered as a motorcycle and has an engine of 200 cc or more.
South Dakota is very specific about what the ATV must be equipped with before it hits the road. Here are a few of the requirements:
  • Illuminated registration plate
  • Headlamp and taillight
  • Operable brakes
  • Turn signals
  • Horn
Check online with the South Dakota DMV for more specifics on ATV requirements and ATV rules of the road.
