background
The
Honda Pilot
checks off marks for size, performance, and utility, but unfortunately, this American family favorite is not currently offered with a plug-in hybrid option. Drivers who are looking specifically for a PHEV should instead consider the Kia Sorento PHEV, Hyundai Tucson PHEV, or Toyota Rav4 PHEV.
While many automakers are beginning to lean into the trend of hybrid, PHEV, and all-electric vehicles, many still have a long way to go before these options are offered for every available model. Although the Honda Pilot is not currently offered with a PHEV option, or any electrified alternative,
Honda
does have plans to get there eventually while other eco-friendly models are introduced.

Is the Honda Pilot available as a PHEV?

No. The Honda Pilot midsize SUV currently does not offer a plug-in hybrid option.
Honda has plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid Honda Pilot as part of the model’s next generation. The fourth-generation Honda Pilot could come as quickly as 2023, although nothing has been confirmed yet. In the meantime, Honda offers the following eco-friendly options:

The Honda Pilot is a standard pleaser for the American family in many ways, but those immediately looking for an eco-friendly powertrain will have to look elsewhere. If you can’t wait for the next generation of Honda Pilots to come out with a PHEV option, check out the Kia Sorento PHEV, Hyundai Tucson PHEV, and the Toyota Rav4 PHEV instead.

2022 Kia Sorento PHEV

The 2022
Kia Sorento
plug-in hybrid starts at $46,485 and is available in two trims—
SX
and SX Prestige. You’ll be hard-pressed to find many entry-level plug-in hybrid three-row SUVs, but the Sorento can fit a family of up to eight passengers. You may lose out on cargo space when all three rows are in use, but you’re likely going to enjoy this midsize SUV’s pleasant drivability.
The Sorento PHEV has an all-electric driving range of 32 miles on a single charge. It has a combined rating of  79MPGe combined when the gas engine and battery are working together, and it’s rated for 35 mpg highway and 33 mpg city on gas-only. The PHEV powertrain pairs a turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a 66.9 kW dual electric motor for a combined 261 horsepower.

2022 Hyundai Tucson PHEV

If a third-row isn’t a selling point for you, you may want to consider the two-row
Hyundai Tucson
PHEV which starts at a much more approachable $35,975. This plug-in hybrid SUV is also only available in two trims —
SEL
and
Limited
. This PHEV is also run by a turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a dual electric motor.
The Tucson leans into futuristic design elements — a common trait of electrified vehicles — and some of the gimmicks may not be for everyone. However, it delivers a modest 33 miles of electric-only driving range and 80 MPGe combined fuel economy. The Tucson PHEV’s 13.8 kWh battery can be fully recharged in just 2 hours with a Level 2 charger.

2022 Toyota RAV4 PHEV

Though smaller and sportier than a Honda Pilot, the
Toyota RAV4
PHEV is a viable option for anyone who wants a full suite of modern tech and plenty of cargo. It starts at $41,515 but also comes as a standard Hybrid starting at $30,790. The PHEV is only available on the higher-tier Prime SE and Prime XSE trims, but buying new may earn you a $7,500 federal tax credit.
The EPA rates the RAV4 Prime for 42 miles of electric-only driving range and 94 MPGe combined — making this the most efficient of our recommendations. Charging times vary from 2.5 to 4.5 hours with a Level 2 charger, depending on whether or not you opt for the Prime XSE trim with the available 6.6-kWh onboard charger.
