What are Wyoming license plates and why do I need them?

Put simply, license plates are like ID tags for your car. They don’t just prove that your car is registered and identify your registration type—they also connect you to your vehicle!
This is super important for a few reasons. First, if you get into an accident, license plates smooth out the process of determining who caused the accident. Second, license plates are crucial for tracking down stolen vehicles. Last (but definitely not least!), license plates help authorities find you during an emergency.
Given how essential they are to society, it should come as no surprise that Wyoming state law requires you to have both a front and rear license plate. They also need to be securely fastened and plainly visible.
Thankfully, the existence of license plate laws doesn’t mean you can’t get a killer custom plate! Let’s check out some of Wyoming’s coolest designs.

What license plates does Wyoming have?

Though Wyoming has tons of variety, you should know about three main groups of license plates:
  • Standard plates, which are super common—they’re blue and yellow with Lower Green River Lake in the background
  • Special interest plates that support causes like wildlife conservation
  • Special plates, which range from antique car plates to special designs for veterans, EMTs, and firefighters

Standard license plates

As of 2022, Wyoming only has one standard plate available: the Lower Green River Lake and Squaretop Mountain design. It’s got yellow lettering and a background of the blue sky—so it’s perfect for anyone who wants to support Wyoming’s great outdoors without looking too flashy!
If you want the classic Wyoming design with an added splash of personality, you can get a
prestige plate
, which allows you to customize the five letters on your plate.

Special interest license plates

  • University of Wyoming
: Sure, this plate design will set you back $130—but if you’re a true Wyoming Cowboy, it’ll be worth it! $100 of your payment will be donated to UW scholarships, and you’ll get a nifty yellow and brown plate design.
  • Wildlife conservation
: It should come as no surprise that the home of
    Yellowstone National Park
would be bursting with biodiversity! If you want to contribute to the preservation of Wyoming’s wildlife, you can give $150 to the
    Wildlife Conservation Fund
and raise awareness with your sweet new license plate.

Special license plates

  • Radio amateur
: If you’re licensed by the FCC as a radio operator, you can show off your passion with Wyoming’s radio amateur plates.
  • Disabled veteran

  • EMT
: Emergency Medical Technicians in Wyoming get a chance to apply for this super cool plate! It’s similar to Wyoming’s standard plate, but it has the Rod of Asclepius (the Greek symbol of healing and medicine) inscribed on its left side.
  • Tribal plates
: Even if you aren’t a tribal member, you can still apply for a Northern Arapaho or Northern Shoshone Tribe plate. These applications come with a $100 fee, $70 of which goes towards funding Tribal Scholarships.

How do I get a Wyoming license plate?

Here’s the good news: you automatically get Wyoming plates when you register your car! The registration process in Wyoming is fairly simple. All you need to do is go to your
local county treasurer’s office
with these items:
  • A copy of your vehicle’s title
  • Proof of identification (driver’s license, passport, etc.)
  • Your out-of-state registration (only if you just moved to Wyoming!)
  • Your VIN
  • A copy of the dealer invoice or lease agreement (if applicable)
  • Payment for fees and taxes
  • A $30 state registration fee
  • A county fee (cost varies)
That’s all there is to it! Once you’ve registered your vehicle with the Wyoming Department of Transportation, you’re well on your way to having the license plates of your dreams. Don’t forget to renew your plates each year to retain your custom design!
