Requirements for getting a Utah driver’s license

You need to be at least 16 years of age to get your driver’s license in Utah—but you can get a learner’s permit as early as 15 years old.
Once you’ve held your permit for at least six months and met
Utah’s requirements for permit holders
, you’re ready to graduate to your full-fledged driver’s license!
Start by making sure you have the following documents before you set off to a
Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) Driver License Division Office
  • Proof of identity and lawful presence: A U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, or permanent resident card can all satisfy this requirement.
  • Social Security number: Proof of social security in the form of e your Social Security card, a W-2 form, or a paycheck stub is needed for a Utah driver’s license. Whatever you choose, make sure your full Social Security number appears on the document.
  • Proof of residential address: This could be a bank statement, rental or mortgage paperwork, or a utility bill. You’ll need to provide two separate documents that prove your Utah residency.
If this is your first time heading to the driver’s license office, you may also be required to provide proof that you’ve completed the state’s driver's education requirements or bring your license from another state.
All of the
required documents
must be originals—no photocopies will be accepted.

Requirements for drivers under 18

If you are under 18, you will need permission from a parent or legal guardian to get a driver’s license or a learner’s permit. Young drivers will need to complete a few extra steps before they can get their Class D license:
  • Carry a Utah Learner’s Permit for a minimum of six months
  • Complete a driver education course after the permit is issued
  • Complete an online Traffic Safety and Trends Exam
  • Pass an eye test, written exam, and driving skills test
  • Complete 40 hours of practice driving with a parent (10 of these have to be after dark)
The fee for a Learner Permit is $19. Visit Utah.gov’s

Requirements for out-of-state drivers

New residents should apply for their Utah driver’s license as soon as possible, as there is no grace period for new residents. The fee for a new license in Utah is $52.
You will need to bring all the required documents listed above and surrender your out-of-state license before you can be issued a valid Utah driver’s license.
A vision test is also usually required, and in some cases, you may need to take Utah’s written exam or road test as well.

How to get a Utah driver’s license

Getting a Regular Class D Driver’s License in Utah will cost $52 and you’ll need to provide appropriate documentation, complete exams, and do paperwork.
Here’s a step-by-step overview of what to expect:
  1. Vision test: Every applicant will have to pass an eye exam. Utah requires drivers to have at least 20/40 vision and peripheral fields of 120 degrees in at least one eye in order to pass the exam.
  2. Knowledge exam: The written knowledge exam is based on information found in the
    Utah Driver Handbook
, so make sure you’re familiar with its contents. If you have never been licensed to drive anywhere, the test is a 50-question closed book exam. If you’ve been previously licensed in another state or country, the test is 25 questions and open book. You must score at least 80% on the written knowledge test in order to pass. An online
    practice test
    can help you study!
  3. Road test: The road test evaluates your driving skills in action, and can be
    scheduled
with the Utah Driver License Division (DLD). But you may also be able to complete the test as part of an
    approved driver education program
or through an approved third-party road test provider.
Once you pass your test, you can pay the $52 fee and get your full driver’s license! You’ll be issued a temporary license until your permanent one arrives in the mail—this usually takes between 8 and 10 weeks.
