The Hyundai Santa Fe is a midsize crossover. This means that it’s built on a car’s chassis with a unibody design. In other words, the body and the frame are one singular piece.
Drivers and vehicle manufacturers will often call crossovers SUVs, but a sport utility vehicle is actually a different animal. Genuine SUVs are built on a truck’s chassis and use a body-on-frame design. That means the frame and body are built separately and joined together during the manufacturing process.
It can be hard to tell crossovers and SUVs apart, but generally, you can expect crossovers to be lighter weight than SUVs. On the other hand, SUVs tend to be more rugged and able to haul heavier loads.
In terms of physical size, SUVs are generally midsize or full-size vehicles. Crossovers are a bit more versatile, available anywhere from compact to full-size.
