Lamborghini’s 5 Coolest Concept Cars

Estoque, Asterion, Millennio, and V12—the future is here with the best concept cars from Lamborghini.

An all-electric sports car? A V12 engine? A revolution of the
tried-and-true sedan
? To say Lamborghini concept cars—like the Millennio, Asterion, Estoque, and V12—have blurred the lines between fantasy and reality is an extreme understatement.
Creating a car is equal parts science and artistry. Like any artist (or mad scientist worth their lab equipment), the designers and engineers at AutomobiliLamborghini love to push the bounds of the imagination with futuristic concept cars.
Are vehicles like the Asterion or V12 too “out there” to ever see production? Perhaps, but there are always a few of today’s prototypes that make it into tomorrow’s factories, bringing mankind closer to cleaner, greener, and more efficient technology.

2008 Lamborghini Estoque

The LamborghiniEstoque couldn’t help but stand out, not just because of its 5.2L FSI V10 engine or svelte, eye-catching design, but because it was a four-doorGT in the traditionally two-door world of concept cars. Conceived as a new breed of sedan that was as luxurious as it was practical, the estimated price tag would have been $230,000.
Later, Lamborghini did end up venturing outside the sports car market with the four-door Urus in 2018. Perhaps the two cars share more under the hood, but it’s a pity that Lamborghini didn’t borrow more from the Estoque’s low, lean silhouette and oversized wheelbase.

2014 Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4

In the amount of time it takes to say its full name, the Lamborghini Asterion Longitudinale Posteriore Ibrido 910-4 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (about 3 seconds flat). A few more seconds and the 5.2L V10 engine will reach its top speed of 185 mph—or 78 mph, if you’re using the twin electricmotors and lithium-ion batterypack
That’s right! The Asterion is a hybrid.
Inside the carbon-fiber monocoque body and aluminum frame, lies the trademark Lamborghini luxury: ivory leather upholstery, aluminum/titanium trim, and upright seating in true grand touring style. Further, drivers can choose between the Zero (full electric), Ibrido (combined gas and electric), and Termico (gas-only) driving modes.
Canceled due to lukewarm consumer reception, sadly, the only way most of us will ever get to drive an Asterion is by picking up the video game Real Racing 3, Asphalt 8, or Asphalt 9.

2017 Terzo Millennio

If there’s one thing that makes a
sports car
, it’s the growling engine, the satisfying shifting of a manual transmission, and the thrill of pure power. Most people wouldn’t believe an electric motor could reach those heights, but that’s exactly what Lamborghini and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) did.
With an e-motor mounted at every wheel, the Terzo Millennio is every bit a sports car as its gasoline-fueled peers. So, how’s it work?
Four supercapacitors, capable of instantly capturing and discharging energy, substitute for batteries, which power its carbon-fiber body on an autonomous racetrack system. The Terzo Millennio (or third-millennium) car, if it ever saw production, could lead to some truly electrifying performances on the track.

2019 Lamborghini V12 Vision Gran Turismo

Your first thought upon seeing the Lambo V12 is likely that it looks like something out of a video game—and you’d be right! Unveiled at the Gran Turismo Championship World Finals in Monaco, this cutout concept car was developed exclusively for the Gran Turismo Sport PS4 game, where it debuted virtually in Spring 2020.
It’s as hard to ignore all the details packed into this car—like the Y-shaped headlights, hexagonal elements, neon lines, and 6.5L V12 hybrid powertrain—as it is to ignore what’s missing. In a quest to create the ultimate lightweight racecar (which weighs a paltry 1,800 pounds), Lamborghini opted to disconnect the four corners and create a“monoposto” body. The entire front section lifts up and away, allowing a single driver to drop in like a fighter pilot.
The virtual driving experience is just as wild. In the game, the player navigates with a holographic display projected onto the car’s windshield. The 774 horsepower probably doesn’t strike you as satisfying as it would in the real world, but the Lambo V12 does what every concept car is supposed to do: fuel the imagination with pure adrenaline.

2019 Lamborghini LB48H Terzo Millennio

In 2019, the Terzo Millennio came back with a vengeance! The world’s first hybrid supercar paired an electric motor with a 6.5L V12 engine on the rear axle for a whopping 838 horsepower
Continuing its partnership with MIT, Lamborghini finally brought developments in energy storage, materials, and electric propulsion to production. A limited run of 63 units went on sale for $2.5 million each—and sold out before the first car even left the factory.
Perhaps the coolest thing about this car is its capacity to heal itself. Let that sink in for a sec.
Using microchannels filled with conductive chemicals, the car can both sense damage and move to repair it autonomously. Whether or not you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of one on the road (hey, we can dream!) is uncertain, though.
The car was set to debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show, but since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, there’s been no word.
