background
Per the REAL ID Act, all
driver’s licenses
in
Idaho
must be upgraded to a Star Card to be REAL ID-compliant as of May 3rd, 2023. If your documents are not updated to be REAL ID-compliant, you will need some other form of valid ID (like a U.S. passport) to board a plane or enter a federal building.
Your driver’s license is your most important piece of identification. It lets you legally drive and quickly and easily prove your identity, age, and address. As of 2023, you must upgrade your Idaho driver’s license to a REAL ID-compliant form of ID in the form of a Star Card to use it in certain high-security scenarios.

What is REAL ID?

The REAL ID is a product of 9/11 and the era’s intense focus on national security. In the wake of these events, the 9/11 Commission urged Congress to establish a new standard for identification called the
REAL ID Act
This act will be enforced starting in 2023 and will effectively make driver’s licenses invalid as identification to do certain things like fly domestically.

Who needs a REAL ID?

As of May 3, 2023, you will need a REAL ID to do the following:
  • Enter certain federal facilities
  • Enter a nuclear power plant
  • Board a federally regulated commercial aircraft, including domestic flights
For most people, the change to flying domestically is the most pertinent one. So, if you intend to continue using your Idaho driver’s license to fly within the U.S., you must ensure it’s REAL ID-compliant by 2023.
If you are unable to upgrade your driver’s license to be REAL ID-compliant by the deadline,  other identification documents are still valid for boarding a flight.

TSA website
Key Takeaway: The REAL ID Act was established to enact new standards for identification documents. Idaho residents need to get their Star Card before May 3rd, 2023, as they will be unable to board a flight and enter certain federal buildings with only their driver’s license.

How to get an Idaho REAL ID

Upgrading to a REAL ID in Idaho means applying for a Star Card. This can act as your new driver’s license, meaning it allows you to legally drive and prove your identity for a host of things like buying alcohol or applying for social services.
You will need to provide documents such as your birth certificate or Social Security number and two proofs of your Idaho residency (mortgage statement, utility bill, etc.) to confirm the following:
The documents you provide must be in your current legal name and be dated within one year.
You can get your Star Card at the same DMV where you would get your driver’s license. Check out this list of
