How old do you have to be to rent a car in Alabama?

I’ll be in Alabama this summer for a long-term service trip with my volunteer group. While there, I was hoping to rent a car so that I can get around and explore the area on our off days. What’s the minimum age to rent a car in Alabama?

Good for you—I hope you have a great summer working hard and enjoying your time off to learn a little more about the surrounding area.
In
Alabama
, the minimum age to rent a vehicle is 19. Throughout most of the country, you need to be at least 18, but that’s not the case for Sweet (Volunteer) Home Alabama.
But not so fast—depending on the rental agency, you may need to be even older.
Most major rental companies have a minimum rental age set at 21. And depending on your exact age, you will be charged a young renter fee, since young drivers are considered high risk.
If you’re a member of
AAA
, this fee is typically waived. You’ll also want to carry
proof of insurance
and a valid
driver’s license
.
Also, be sure to look over your
rental car insurance
if you need more coverage. While you’re at it, it’s a great time to review your current coverage using
