How to replace a lost driver’s license in New York

Whether you’re looking to replace a standard license, a
REAL ID
, or a
commercial license
, you can do so through the same process. Some reasons you may need to replace your license include:
  • Your old license was lost or stolen
  • You changed your address
  • You’re almost 21 years old
If any of these apply to you, here are the ways you can go about replacing your license. No matter which way you go about replacing your license, you’ll need to pay a $17.50 fee

Replace your license online

If you want to replace your license from the comfort of your own home, a popular way to do so is online. All you have to do is follow
these instructions
, and, before you know it, you should be approved for a new license.
Keep in mind that you cannot upgrade from a standard license to a REAL ID using the online portal.

Replace your license by mail

If you’d rather replace your driver’s license by mail, New York gives you the option to do so. You cannot upgrade to a REAL ID by mail
To get started, you’ll need to gather proof of identity along with $17.50 in a money order or check. Then you can get started filling out the
application form
. Once all the materials have been gathered together, you should send them to:
NYS Department of Motor Vehicles
207 Genesee Street, Suite 6
Utica, NY 13501-2874

Replace your license in person

The third option for replacing your license in New York is to go in person to a New York State DMV office. You’ll still have to fill out the same form that you would if you replaced it by mail, but going to the DMV in person does allow you to upgrade to a REAL ID

What if you lose your New York license out of state?

If your license is lost or stolen while you aren’t in New York, you obviously won’t be able to visit the DMV in person. You can still request to have your license replaced online, but it will be sent to your New York address.
The solution to this is to apply for a new license by mail. If you go this route, you’ll have the opportunity to provide a temporary address where the DMV can then mail your license.
Applying by mail is also the only way to replace your license if you are out of the country. You’ll still need to fill out the standard application, and the DMV recommends you send them a pre-addressed envelope for them to return your license inside of.
