Replace your license online
If you want to replace your license from the comfort of your own home, a popular way to do so is online. All you have to do is follow these instructions
, and, before you know it, you should be approved for a new license. Keep in mind that you cannot upgrade from a standard license to a REAL ID using the online portal.
Replace your license by mail
If you’d rather replace your driver’s license by mail, New York gives you the option to do so. You cannot upgrade to a REAL ID by mail.
To get started, you’ll need to gather proof of identity along with $17.50 in a money order or check. Then you can get started filling out the application form

Replace your license in person
The third option for replacing your license in New York is to go in person to a New York State DMV office. You’ll still have to fill out the same form that you would if you replaced it by mail, but going to the DMV in person does allow you to upgrade to a REAL ID.
What if you lose your New York license out of state?
If your license is lost or stolen while you aren’t in New York, you obviously won’t be able to visit the DMV in person. You can still request to have your license replaced online, but it will be sent to your New York address.
The solution to this is to apply for a new license by mail. If you go this route, you’ll have the opportunity to provide a temporary address where the DMV can then mail your license.
Applying by mail is also the only way to replace your license if you are out of the country. You’ll still need to fill out the standard application, and the DMV recommends you send them a pre-addressed envelope for them to return your license inside of.
