Coming in as the replacement for the iconic Neon, the Caliber is a compact hatchback from
Dodge
that was produced from 2006 to 2011. The Caliber was equipped with a four-cylinder engine and an optional all-wheel drive system, and it offered versatility and good fuel economy. However, it struggled to compete against other established compact hatchbacks like the
Volkswagen Rabbit
. Production ended in 2011, with only 400,000 models made.

2007 Dodge Caliber ground clearance

A 2007 Dodge Caliber has a ground clearance of between 6.6 and 8.1 inches, depending on trim level. There were six distinct trim levels offered on the 2007 Caliber, so let’s take a look at them:
  • R/T
    : 8.1 inches
  • R/T AWD: 7.0 inches
  • SE 1.8: 7.0 inches
  • SE 2.0: 7.0 inches
  • SXT 1.8: 6.6 inches
  • SXT 2.0: 6.6 inches
As you can see, most Calibers sit between 6.6 and 7 inches off the ground. The highest you’ll be able to get is 8.1 inches off the ground, courtesy of the R/T trim.
Although the 2008 Caliber had a ground clearance of 8.1 inches on not one, but two trims, the following years saw Dodge slowly start to shift to a standardized level of underbody clearance across all models. This was finalized in 2010, when all remaining Calibers were offered with a standard 7.7 inches of ground clearance.

What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?

Just in case you were wondering, a vehicle’s ground clearance is a measurement of the area between the road surface and the vehicle’s undercarriage. In simpler terms, it is the space between your car and the ground. This is a very important measurement to be aware of, especially if you ever have to take your Caliber off road.
Vehicles built with off-road performance in mind typically have a high level of ground clearance, allowing them to surmount any rocks, vegetation, or other materials that could damage the underside of your car. Most experts recommend at least 8.5 inches  of ground clearance for any serious voyages off the beaten path.

Is the Dodge Caliber a good off-road vehicle?

Despite Dodge’s famous “grab life by the horns” maxim, the Caliber is more of a “hold life by the hand” vehicle, as it is simply not cut out for any serious off-roading activity. Sure, it has AWD capabilities and it almost hits the minimum 8.5 inch threshold, but the fact remains that the Caliber was destined for the hardtop from its very inception.
If you really want a vehicle that performs admirably both on and off road, maybe consider getting something like a Jeep Wrangler or
Toyota Tacoma
