Dodge Durango ground clearance over the years

If you’re driving an older Durango from the 1st or 2nd generation, your SUV’s ground clearance might be as low as 7.9 inches or as high as 9.7 inches off the ground!
Here’s how the Durango’s ground clearance has changed since 1998:
  • 1st generation (1998–2003): 7.9 to 9.7 inches
  • 2nd generation (2004–2009): 8.7 inches
  • 3rd generation (2011–now): 8.0 to 8.2 inches
Don’t forget that the exact ground clearance for your Durango depends on the trim level and model year—especially for the first generation. For example, the 2003 Durango has 9.0 inches of ground clearance for more than half the trims, while the rest go down to 8.5 inches.

What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?

Ground clearance—also known as ride height—is the measurement of the distance between your vehicle’s chassis (or body) and the road below. If you’re considering purchasing a brand-new SUV, ground clearance is an important component to factor in when making your decision. This is especially true if you plan on taking your Dodge Durango on some off-roading adventures in the future.
So why does ground clearance matter? Generally, higher ground clearance will put you in a much better position to handle rough and bumpy road conditions. A higher ride height will also help you prevent damaging the bottom of your vehicle.
If you’re venturing out on an off-roading excursion soon, experts recommend a ground clearance of at least 8.5 inches for your vehicle. All Dodge Durangos from the current third-generation run short by 0.4-0.5 inches. If you're driving your Durango out on unknown territory, make sure you have a Durango from the first or second generation—or exercise extreme caution with the newer models!

Is the Dodge Durango a good off-road vehicle?

If you have a Dodge Durango from the first or second generation with a ground clearance above 8.5 inches, then you’re in the clear! But if you have a Durango from 2011 onward, your SUV can still handle reasonable off-roading escapades
While the distance between your vehicle and the road does matter, there are other factors to consider as well. The 2022 Durango comes equipped with a 295-horsepower V6 engine but you can spring for the optional 360-horsepower V8 engine to really have the road rumbling below you. The Durango also comes with excellent driver assistance features, like the all-speed traction control that will prevent your SUV from rolling over.
