background
If your Acura MDX’s battery has died or been replaced recently, you will need to enter a radio code before you are able to use your sound system or stereo again. You can find this code printed on a sticker in your glove box or underneath the engine fuse box cover, in your owner’s manual, via online lookup, or by calling your local Acura dealer.
Although you may not have known it, your Acura MDX's sound system is safeguarded by a simple security measure called a radio code, which helps deter thieves from trying to steal your stereo. You will need to know this code if your Acura’s battery is ever replaced—but first you’ll need to know where to find it.
That’s why the

Why do I need an Acura MDX radio code?

You might be a little perplexed if this is the first time you've ever seen your Acura MDX’s radio flash a "code" message—after all, you've never had to enter a code before, right? Why should things be any different this time?
Simply put, whenever the battery has died or been replaced, your radio asks for a code as a security measure in an effort to deter would-be stereo thieves. This is an especially useful feature to have if you don't have
sound system insurance
.
The only drawback is that you won't be able to use the radio or listen to music until the code is entered if you don't know the code or don't have it on hand.

How to find your Acura MDX radio code

Fortunately, finding your Acura MDX radio code isn’t very difficult and there are actually several ways of locating it—the easiest, however, is to press and hold your power button for a couple of seconds. This will rest your radio and oftentimes does the trick.
If that doesn’t work, you can also look for an “Anti-Theft Radio Code” sticker. The exact location of this sticker will depend on your model year and vehicle submodel, but the most common locations include:
  • Inside the glove box
  • Underneath the engine compartment fuse box cover
  • On a door or trunk jamb
  • In your owner’s manual
This code will only ever be five-digits long—anything longer or shorter is the wrong code. It will usually be printed above the radio’s serial number.

How to look up your Acura MDX radio code

But if you’ve misplaced your owner’s manual or can’t find a sticker with a code on it, don’t worry—you’ll still be able to look up your Acura MDX radio code, just with a few additional steps.
Before doing so, however, you’ll need to find your
Acura's vehicle identification number (VIN)
and your radio’s serial number—check below for advice on how to find them.
  • VIN: Your VIN is a unique 17-digit alphanumeric sequence and can be found on your vehicle registration, insurance statement, Acura financial services statement, or printed on a plaque at the base of your windshield on the driver’s side dash.
  • Radio serial number: If you have an Acura MDX produced earlier than 2001, the serial number can be found on the base of the radio itself, meaning the entire unit will need to be removed—this will require a trip to your local Acura dealership.
If you own an Acura MDX from 2001 or later, you can obtain the radio serial number from the device display by following the instructions below:
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON
  2. Turn the device on and verify that the display reads CODE (if you don't see this message, pull the backup fuse for 1 minute and then return to step 1)
  3. Turn the device OFF
  4. Press and hold the 1 and 6 radio preset buttons and turn ON the device
  5. The first screen displays a U and the first four digits of the serial number (for example, U2200).
  6. The second screen displays an L and the last four digits of the serial number (for example, L0055).
  7. Ignore the U and L, and write down all eight digits.
Once you have both the serial number and VIN, you can look up your radio code by calling (800) 382-2238 or via
Acura’s OEM website
—aside from these numbers, you will also need to be able to provide your identifying information.
