Knowing how much gas your fuel tank holds is important. It can mean the difference between getting to where you’re going or getting stuck on the side of the road with an empty gas tank.
Your owner’s manual has all the fuel tank capacity info you need, but if you accidentally left it on top of your car and drove away in a rush, don’t worry! Trusted

How big is the gas tank on an Acura MDX?

The fully-redesigned 2022 Acura MDX is outfitted with a larger-than-usual 18.5-gallon fuel tank to compliment its powerful engine and tech-savvy interior. But, while the MDX’s fuel tank capacity holds steady throughout the 2022 line-up, it does vary from year to year.
Here’s a look at how the MDX’s gas tank size has grown and shrunk over the past two decades:
  • 2022 MDX: 18.5 gallons
  • 2017 to 2020 MDX: 19.4 to 19.5 gallons
  • 2014 to 2016 MDX: 19.5 gallons
  • 2007 to 2013: 21 gallons
  • 2006: 20.4 gallons
  • 2002 to 2005: 19.2 gallons
While the MDX’s gas tank has varied from year to year, 2017 to 2020 is the only time that the gas tank size varied from trim to trim. The smaller 19.4-gallon gas tanks from these years were found on all hybrid versions of the MDX, while models with the classic internal combustion engine sported a slightly larger 19.5-gallon reservoir.

How to check your Acura MDX’s gas tank size

If you need to know your MDX’s gas tank size and don’t want to take our word for it, there are a few different ways that you can figure it out on your own.

Measure the gas tank

The most hands-on way to get your Acura MDX’s fuel capacity info is by measuring the tank yourself. All you need is a tape measure and a calculator.
First, measure your gas tank’s width, length, and height in inches. Multiply these three numbers together to find your tank’s volume in cubic inches. Then, divide that number by 231—the number of cubic inches in a gallon—and you have the number of gallons your gas tank will hold.
Here’s an example: say your tank measures 16 inches wide, 16 inches long, and 14 inches deep, multiplying those numbers together gives you a volume of 3,584 cubic inches. Divide that number by 231, and you’ll see that this hypothetical tank holds 15.52 gallons of gasoline.

Check your owner’s manual

The most hands-off way to find out your car’s gas tank capacity is by consulting your 2022 Acura MDX owner’s manual. This info can be found on page 23 in the “Quick Reference Guide” section, or in more detail in the “Refueling” section on page 596. The 2022 Acura MDS owner’s manual recommends filling your tank with unleaded premium gas with an octane level of at least 91.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

If you’re feeling somewhat daring, you can figure out your fuel tank capacity the way action stars do it in the movies—by driving until your “low fuel” light comes on, then filling up your tank. Take note of how many gallons it takes to fill your car up, and you’ll have a general idea of how much your gas tank holds.
Just be careful not to drive until your tank runs completely out of gas. Running out of fuel can cause your engine to stall, inhibiting your ability to steer and brake. This can be dangerous, especially if you are driving at high speeds or on rugged terrain.

How to save on fuel costs in an Acura MDX

The 2022 Acura MDX’s fuel economy ratings aren’t going to turn any heads. Front-wheel drive models put up the best numbers with a rating of 26 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city. All-wheel drive models lose one mpg on the highway, and the high-performance Type-S trim records a low 19 combined city/highway mpg rating.
With numbers like that, you might have to take matters into your own hands to keep your fuel costs down. Luckily there are a few ways to save at the pump:
  • Keep your car in good shape. Sticking to your manufacturer’s
    recommended maintenance schedule
will help to keep your car’s engine running in tip-top shape and reduce the amount of gasoline burnt needlessly.
  • Go easy on the throttle. Accelerating aggressively burns a lot of fuel. Ease up on the gas pedal, and you’ll ease the pressure on your wallet, too.
  • Stop idling. Warming up your car by letting it idle in the driveway in the winter is a big waste of gas. Let your car warm up as you drive—a few minutes of discomfort could help you save hundreds on gasoline.

How to optimize your Acura MDX’s insurance coverage

Reducing your gas spending isn’t the only way to save money on your MDX. You can save even more money by switching car insurance providers and lowering your Acura MDX insurance costs.
