How big is the gas tank on an Acura RDX?

The RDX has historically had a larger-than-average gas tank, and the 2022 edition is no exception with a 17.1-gallon gas tank.
Acura has made the RDX available in only one trim for 2022. It comes with a 2.0-liter 272-horsepower four-cylinder engine and is available in front or all-wheel drive. As such, there is only one gas tank size to choose from for this year’s RDX—a 17.1-gallon behemoth.
But the RDX’s fuel tank has fluctuated in size over the past 15 years, so your tank may be smaller or bigger if you’re driving an earlier model. Here’s a look at Acura RDX gas tank sizes over the years:
  • 2019–2022: 17.1 gallons
  • 2013–2018: 16 gallons
  • 2007–2012: 18 gallons
The average gas tank holds between 13 and 16 gallons of fluid. As you can see, the RDX has always come in on the large side of the gas tank size spectrum.

How to check your Acura RDX’s gas tank size

Still not sure what size gas tank your Acura RDX is rocking? Here are a few ways that you can figure out your car’s fuel capacity on your own.

Measure the gas tank

You can find your car’s fuel capacity by measuring the gas tank with a tape measurer. Just follow these instructions:
  • Measure the height, length, and width of the tank in inches.
  • Calculate the tank’s volume in cubic inches by multiplying the height, length, and width together. (eg. 15 x 16 x 17 = 4,080 cu. in.)
  • Divide your total volume by 231—the number of cubic inches in a gallon. (eg. 4,080/231=17.66 gallons)

Check your owner’s manual

You can find your car’s fuel capacity and other specs on page 23 of your 2022 Acura RDX owner’s manual in the section entitled “Quick Reference Guide”. This section also recommends using unleaded premium gasoline with 91 octane or higher. More detailed fueling information can be found on page 574 of the 2022 Acura RDX manual.
Page numbers and specs may differ depending on what year and trim RDX you own. To find fueling information in your owner’s manual, look for headings like “Refueling”, “Fuel Information”, or “Fuel Tank Capacity”.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

You can figure out your car’s fuel capacity the adventurous way—by driving until your fuel warning light comes on and then filling up your tank. Take a look at the pump to see how many gallons it took to take your tank from nearly empty to completely full, and you’ll have a pretty good estimate of how many gallons your tank holds.
Just don’t drive until your car runs completely out of gas—it could cause your engine to stall, and restrict your ability to brake and steer effectively.

How to save on fuel costs in an Acura RDX

The RDX is arguably
the best Acura SUV
—and its fuel economy rating is one of the reasons why. The 2022 RDX has a combined city/highway fuel economy rating of 24 miles per gallon. But gas prices are extremely high right now, so here are a few ways to help you save more on gas:
  • Maintenance is a must: Keeping up with your
    regular maintenance schedule
will help keep your engine running as efficiently as possible with minimal wasted fuel.
  • Easy does it: Your car’s engine burns fuel less efficiently at high RPMs. Take care to accelerate gradually, and you’ll notice less of a drain on both your gas tank and your wallet.
  • Cool it with the warm-up time: Letting your car warm up idly on cold winter days is a big fuel waster. Instead, let your car’s cabin heat up as you drive. This little change could save you hundreds on fuel every year.
