background
The size of an Acura TLX gas tank is determined by the model year. Most have a fuel capacity of 17.2 gallons, but 2021 and newer models hold 15.9 gallons.
You’ll need to know your car’s fuel capacity to prepare yourself for the cost of a tank when you pull up to the pump. Usually, a vehicle’s gas tank size is listed in the owner’s manual, but if yours is missing, you’re not out of luck.

How big is the gas tank on an Acura TLX?

The gas tank on an Acura TLX is either 17.2 or 15.9 gallons.
Most Acura models come with a 17.2-gallon fuel tank. When the TLX was redesigned in 2021, the gas tank shrunk to 15.9 gallons
Somewhat counterintuitively, older TLX models get better gas mileage than newer model years. The 2020 TLX gets 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. The redesigned TLX achieves slightly less with 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.
With a smaller gas tank and slightly worse fuel economy, expect to hit the gas station more often if you’re driving a newer TLX.

How to check your Acura TLX’s gas tank size

Not sure about our stats? You can figure out your gas tank size on your own by using a few tried-and-true techniques.

Measure the gas tank

An effective method of finding the volume of a fuel tank is by measuring it. You’ll need a measuring tape to assess the width, length, and height of the gas tank. Then, multiply those numbers on a calculator.
Divide the product by 231 (that’s the number of cubic inches in a gallon), and you’ll have your fuel tank volume.

Check your owner’s manual

The Acura TLX gas tank size is also listed in the owner’s manual. Flip to the index and search for keywords like “fuel tank capacity” or something similar to find the appropriate page and information.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

A riskier, less precise method of measuring the gas tank is driving until the fuel gauge hits “E” and then filling up. When you’re through, note how many gallons it took. This won’t yield an exact measurement of your gas tank size, but it’ll probably be close enough for your purposes (i.e., budgeting for gas).
Be sure you don’t press your luck and end up stranded, though!

How to save on fuel costs in an Acura TLX

Even though the TLX’s gas mileage took a hit after its redesign in 2021, its fuel economy isn’t bad. Plus, you can give it a boost by following these fuel-saving tips:
  • Maintain your vehicle regularly. Don’t let wear and tear build up. It’ll cost you at the pump and when you sell or trade in your car.
  • Drive safely. Accelerate slowly and avoid speeding. It cuts down on gas—and tickets!
  • Don’t let your engine idle. On a cold day, it might be tempting to let your engine run to get the car nice and warm, but it’s a waste of gas that will hurt your mileage.
