background
The 2019 Ford Fusion oil capacity ranges from 4.3 quarts/4.05 liters to 6.0 quarts/5.7 liters, depending on the engine configuration. This model is equipped with Ford’s Intelligent Oil Life Monitor (IOLM) system, which will let you know when it’s time to
change the oil and filter
in your Fusion.
Every car owner needs to follow a basic
car maintenance schedule
to keep their vehicle in tip-top shape—and that includes regular oil changes. This task can be very easy to do on your own at home, but you’ll need to know some important specs first, like oil capacity and viscosity grade.
These specs vary for different engine configurations on a Fusion, but that’s why we’ve put together this guide! Keep reading for the various oil capacities and manufacturer recommendations for oil types, according to your 2019 Ford Fusion’s engine.

2019 Ford Fusion engine oil capacity

The 2019 Ford Fusion was available with four different engine options—each with its own oil capacity. Here’s how these break down:
  • 2019 Ford Fusion 1.5-L Ecoboost: 4.3 quarts or 4.05 liters
  • 2019 Ford Fusion 2.0-L Ecoboost: 5.7 quarts or 5.4 liters
  • 2019 Ford Fusion 2.5-L: 5.7 quarts or 5.4 liters
  • 2019 Ford Fusion 2.7-L Ecoboost: 6.0 quarts or 5.7 liters
Now don’t get the size of your Fusion’s engine confused with its oil capacity. The 1.5-L to 2.7-L measurements on there refer to that specific powertrain’s
engine displacement
—or the amount of space that your engine’s cylinders take up.
Engine displacement is not the same as oil capacity, and you could cause some serious damage by mistaking the two.

What kind of oil does a 2019 Ford Fusion engine need?

You can’t just buy any old engine oil off the shelves once you know how much you need. Ford has specific recommendations for the type of engine oil to use in your 2019 Fusion, and, once again, these vary by engine.
Here’s the type of oil you’ll need based on the engine in your 2019 Ford Fusion:
The most important thing to pay attention to here is the oil’s viscosity grade, which should be either 5W-20 or 5W-30 for a 2019 Fusion. This tells us how thick the oil is in a range of temperatures from zero (the “W” stands for winter) to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Both of these oils should remain relatively thin across all temperatures—which is good for optimal performance.
The SAE simply indicates that this oil should have the Society of Automotive Engineer’s seal of approval. You don’t necessarily need to stick to Motorcraft oil, and you can opt for any blend of conventional or synthetic oil, so long as it meets the viscosity grade. Just be forewarned that deviating from Ford’s recommended oil could void any manufacturer warranties.

How often to change the oil on a 2019 Ford Fusion 2.0 engine

The Intelligent Oil Life Monitor (IOLM) system in your 2019 Ford Fusion should let you know when it’s time to change your oil with an ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message. You should change your oil within two weeks or 500 miles of this message turning on.
You can expect to need an oil change in your 2019 Ford Fusion at varying oils, depending on your vehicle use:
  • For normal use like standard highway driving on flat roads with no additional tow weight, you can expect to need an oil change every 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
  • For severe use like regular towing, extended idling, or regular off-roading, you can expect to need an oil change every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.
  • For extreme use like towing the maximum weight or operating in extremely hot or cold temperatures, you can expect to need an oil change every 3,500 to 5,000 miles.
You can follow these schedules if your IOLM system ever gets reset prematurely or stop working altogether, but keep in mind that these intervals are based on Ford’s recommendation of synthetic blend motor oil. You’ll need to change your oil more often if you use fully conventional oil.
Check your oil about once a month to make sure its level isn’t too low on your dipstick, and keep a close eye on its condition. Black, coarse, or gritty oil could be signs that you need an oil change, as could unusual burning smells, engine sounds, or decreased performance.

How to change your oil and oil filter

You can easily change your Fusion oil at home to
save some money on your car expenses
! Head to your local auto parts store and pick up a socket wrench, a filter wrench, a drain pan, a new filter, and enough of the right kind of engine oil according to your engine configuration.
Let your Fusion run for a minute to warm up the old oil, then turn the engine off,
open the car hood
, and follow these steps:
  • Place the oil drain pan beneath your car’s engine and empty the old oil by first removing the oil fill cap on top and then the oil drain bolt and washer underneath.
  • Use your filter wrench to replace the old filter with the new filter.
  • Once all the old oil has drained out, tighten the oil drain bolt with a new washer to 29 lb-ft of torque
  • Pour your engine oil through the fill hole on top, and check the level with your Fusion’s dipstick to make sure you’ve added enough.
  • Return the oil fill cap, turn the engine on, and check for any leaks as your new oil circulates through the engine.
Once you’re all done, you can turn off the engine and get to resetting the IOLM. Turn your Fusion on but keep it in accessory mode with the engine off. Hold down the brake and gas pedal for 30 seconds to reset the IOLM system. You should see the message: “Service: Oil reset complete”.
Don’t just throw that hazardous, dirty engine oil in the trash! You’ll need to dispose of your waste oil properly by putting it in a sealed container and dropping it off at your local recycling center.
