background
Your 2020 Ford Fusion could be powered by one of three engines: a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder, a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, or a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. If you’re going to change your oil at home, it’s important to know which engine you have, so you can determine your engine oil capacity—which will be either 4.2 quarts or 5.7 quarts.
Performing DIY oil changes is a great way to save time and money, but when your vehicle make and model comes with multiple engine options, knowing exactly how much oil you’ll need for each change can get quickly confusing.
The following guide will walk you through the engine oil capacities for all of the 2020 Ford Fusion engine options. We’ll even go over what type of oil you need for your
Ford
, and offer some necessary tips for your next at-home oil change.

2020 Ford Fusion engine oil capacity

Just how much oil your 2020 Ford Fusion needs depends on the engine under the hood. You have three options, and here are the oil capacities for each:
  • 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine: 4.2 quarts
  • 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine: 5.7 quarts
  • 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine: 5.7 quarts

What kind of oil does a 2020 Ford Fusion need?

Fortunately, the type of oil you need for your 2020 Fusion is a little less complicated. No matter which engine powers your mid-size sedan, Ford recommends full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil.
Not an oil connoisseur? That’s okay—let’s break down exactly what goes into determining oil type.
5W-30 is your oil’s grade, with each of the numbers referring to the oil’s viscosity or thickness. “W” stands for “winter,” with the number before “W” referring to the oil’s viscosity in very low temperatures, and the following number referring to the oil’s viscosity in very high temperatures.
Regardless of grade, motor oil is generally available in conventional, full synthetic, and synthetic blend forms. What’s the difference? Well, synthetic oil is more consistent and longer-lasting than conventional, primarily.
Ford specifically recommends full synthetic oil because it’s better on your engine. The manufacturer specifically recommends Mobil 1 - Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-30 Motor Oil, but any brand should be fine—as long as you select the right grade.

How often to change oil on a 2020 Ford Fusion

You may have heard that it’s necessary to
change your oil
every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, and this is absolutely correct—if you’re using conventional oil.
Because the 2020 Ford Fusion requires full synthetic oil, experts say that you can extend your oil changes to every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. That’s as little as once per year if you don’t drive too much, and only twice per year if you drive a lot! Full synthetic oil may be more expensive by the bottle, but it can save you money in the long run.
Conventional or synthetic, these are pretty big ranges. That’s why experts also recommend that you check your oil on a monthly basis, keeping an eye out for the following signs your oil needs changing:
  • The oil is dark brown or black in color, like cola
  • The oil has a coarse or gritty feeling
  • There are new, unusual noises coming from the engine
  • There are unusual smells coming from the engine, such as oil, smoke, or burning
  • There are noticeable changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and get under your Fusion’s hood? First, gather a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench designed to remove the old oil filter. You’ll also need a replacement filter and the proper amount of full synthetic 5W-30 oil for your specific engine.
Once you have your supplies ready, you’ll want to turn your engine on and let your Fusion reach normal operating temperature. You can use this time to lay down tarps or newspapers, just to ensure that you don’t spill any oil on your driveway or garage floor.
Once your engine is warmed up, turn it off and crack open the hood. You can then follow these steps:
  • Unscrew the oil fill cap
  • Crawl beneath your car and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, allowing the old oil to drain out into the pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and let the remaining oil drain
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
You’ll need to start your car again so that the new oil can fill up the new filter. Then, use your dipstick to check that you’ve added enough oil to the engine, topping it off if needed.
While the vehicle is still running, carefully check for any leaks. If everything looks good, and your dashboard’s
oil pressure light
is off, then you should be good to go! Keep in mind that you may have to reset your oil change reminder light yourself.
Finally, don’t forget to clean up responsibly. It’s very dangerous (and not eco friendly) to pour dirty oil out onto the ground. Instead, place it in a sealed container (such as the oil containers you just emptied) and bring it to a local recycling center for safe disposal.
