The Ford Fusion was a dependable, easy-to-drive sedan that was produced from 2006 to 2020. During that run, there was certainly no shortage of engines that Ford tested, all offering varying levels of power and efficiency. However, with every engine evolution came a new engine oil capacity, making the specification quite confusing to follow.
So let’s make sure you have the right information, no matter which Fusion model you’re paying off a

for! Here’s the engine oil capacity for every Ford Fusion model.

The numbers and letters indicate your oil’s viscosity rating, which indicates its thinness at a range of temperatures. Here’s a quick glossary:
  • SAE: Society of Automotive Engineers is the certified entity that rates oil viscosity
  • First number: Viscosity rating when the oil is 0°F
  • W: Stands for winter, indicating the oil performs well in cold weather conditions
  • Second number: Viscosity rating when the oil is 212°F
All of these oil grades maintain low viscosity ratings (remain thin) at a wide range of temperatures—which is a good thing! Low-viscosity oil runs smoother and stays clean longer, which is healthy for your engine’s efficiency and longevity. This explains why Ford recommends the lowest available viscosity rating (0W-20) for the Fusion’s hybrid engines.

How often to change the oil on a Ford Fusion

With premium synthetic blend oil, you can rack up 7,500 to 10,000 miles before needing to change your Ford Fusion’s oil.
Oil is the essential lubrication your engine needs for its moving parts to function correctly. Clean oil is a golden amber color but as it ages, it becomes a dark brown color. We recommend checking your oil once a month to confirm that it's still in good condition and that the fluid levels are correct.
However, you’ll want to check your oil immediately if you observe anything unusual, like strange smells, smoke, odd noises, performance deviations, or your
oil pressure light
appearing on your dashboard.

How to change your oil and oil filter

Sure, it’s convenient to swing by your local mechanic or Ford dealership over your lunch break to get a quick oil change. However, if you prioritize price over convenience, you can save $25 to $75 by learning how to change your own oil!
The process may vary slightly for each Ford Fusion engine, but these general instructions will point you in the right direction:
  • Gather materials: A socket wrench, a drain pan, a replacement filter, and the appropriate oil for your Ford Fusion.
  • Prep work: Run your Fusion’s engine until it reaches operating temperature. Then, turn the engine off and pop open the hood. Place your drain pan underneath your engine.
  • Remove the filter and drain oil: Begin by removing the oil cap on the engine. Then, remove the drain bolt from underneath the engine using your socket wrench. The oil will drip into the pan below. Remove the old filter and wait until all the oil finishes dripping into the pan.
  • Install new filter and fresh oil: Replace the filter first. Then, reinsert the drain bolt (don’t forget this). You can then pour in the fresh oil!
  • Test your work: Use your dipstick to ensure you’ve replenished your engine with the appropriate amount of oil. Turn on the engine and let the fresh oil settle in. Give your dipstick another test and add extra oil as needed. Before turning your engine off, take a look under your vehicle and look for any leaks.
  • Disposal: You’ll need to bring the old oil to a recycling center for proper disposal.
