background
If you change the oil yourself on a 2017 Honda Civic, you’ll need to reset the engine oil light or “Engine Oil Life” monitor. You can do so via whichever system your 2017 Civic is equipped with—the information display, the driver information interface, or the display audio touchscreen.
The engine oil life display tells you when your oil needs to be changed, though it does not indicate that your oil is low (that’s the oil pressure indicator’s job). A reset ensures that you’ll stay on schedule and change your oil when it's needed.
If you take your Civic for service at a
Honda
dealership, the technicians will reset the engine oil life display for you. However, if you change the oil yourself, you’ll need to reset the engine oil life display, too. Follow these steps to reset a 2017 Honda Civic’s oil light.

How to reset the engine oil life display on a 2017 Honda Civic

If you notice your engine oil life display at around 15% or lower, this means it's time for an oil change. If you perform this service yourself, you’re going to have to reset the engine oil life system so it properly informs you when your 2017 Honda Civic needs its oil changed next.
Thankfully, resetting the engine oil life display back to 100% is easy, though the process is slightly different depending on the kind of display panel you have. Here’s how to reset the engine oil life display whether your Civic is equipped with an information display, driver information interface, or display audio touchscreen
Information display:
  • Press and hold the TRIP knob in the instrument panel—the engine oil life will then appear in the display
  • Press and hold the knob for 10 seconds or more, until the engine oil life display starts blinking
  • Press and hold the knob for 5 seconds or more, and you should see the engine oil life display return to 100%
Driver information interface:
  • With the steering wheel buttons, scroll to and select the Maintenance Minder screen
  • Press and hold the Enter button for 10 seconds to get to Reset Mode
  •  Scroll to the maintenance item you want to reset (or All Due Items) and then select it
Display audio touchscreen:
  • From the home screen, toggle through to Settings
  • Now, select Vehicle
  • Go to Maintenance Info
  • Click on Select Reset Items
  • Select the item on the list to reset (Engine Oil Life)
With any of these three methods, your engine oil monitor will be reset to 100%. Remember, once the engine oil life display shows 15% or lower, change your oil.
How often does a 2017 Honda Civic need an oil change?
How often a 2017 Honda Civic needs an oil change depends on whether you use conventional oil or full synthetic oil in your Civic. Either is fine, but if using conventional oil, you’ll need an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you go with full synthetic oil, you’ll be able to go a bit longer between oil changes—Honda recommends 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
If you’re familiar with your Civic and think you can handle changing the oil yourself, have at it! But be sure to consult your 2017 Honda Civic owner’s manual to ensure you get the job done properly.
