background
Resetting the engine oil maintenance light on a 2017 Hyundai Elantra just requires you to press and hold the OK button on your steering wheel for a few seconds.
Hyundai recommends that you change the oil in your 2017 Elantra engine every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but sometimes the engine oil maintenance light in your vehicle will come on before you’re ready to head to an oil change station. In these instances, it’s important to get your oil checked.

How to reset the engine oil maintenance light on a 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Changing your oil on time is a really important part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
if you want to preserve your vehicle’s overall health and protect your engine. That engine oil maintenance light in your 2017 Hyundai Elantra can be a handy reminder to change your oil… or an annoying glitch that won’t turn off after visiting an oil change station.
Luckily, it only takes a couple of minutes to reset the engine oil maintenance light on your Elantra, and all you’ll need is your car key! Here are the steps you’ll need to follow to reset your oil light:
  1. Start your vehicle’s engine.
  2. Locate the OK button on the top right-hand side of your steering wheel.
  3. Press and hold this button for about two seconds, or until the engine oil maintenance light begins to blink and eventually turns off.
  4. After the service light turns off, turn off your engine. Then, turn your car back on to check that your oil light has successfully reset.
Remember, this will reset your engine oil maintenance system and turn off the oil maintenance light even if you haven’t gotten your oil changed yet. Don’t turn off this important reminder before visiting your local auto shop or you’ll risk damaging your engine with dirty or low oil.

How often does a 2017 Hyundai Elantra need an oil change?

According to Hyundai, it’s recommended that you change the oil in your 2017 Hyundai Elantra every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. This is because Hyundai suggests that you use conventional oil in your Elantra as opposed to synthetic oil.
If you do decide to use synthetic oil instead, you’ll only need to get your oil changed every 7,500 to 10,000 miles, meaning fewer trips to the oil change station. Going longer than this without changing your oil could cause problems for your car’s engine.
Even if you haven’t traveled 7,500 to 10,000 miles yet, it’s a good idea to change your oil if you notice things like:
  • The engine oil maintenance light turns on
  • Shiny bits or chunks in your engine oil
  • A burning smell coming from your engine, particularly while driving
  • Smoke from under the hood of your car
  • Strange sounds from your engine, like a knocking noise
  • Excessive exhaust smoke
  • A low oil level
  • A lower MPG rating than usual
  • Problems with changing gears
Any one of these list items could be indicative of a larger issue with your car, but it’s most likely caused by low or dirty engine oil.

What type of oil does the 2017 Hyundai Elantra need?

It’s recommended by Hyundai that you use about 4.2 quarts of 5W-30 conventional engine oil in your 2017 Hyundai Elantra. However, some experts claim that you can also use 5W-20 conventional oil or synthetic oil of either grade. If you want to play it safe and keep your engine healthy, it’s a good idea to stick to the type of oil that the manufacturer recommends.
