background
If you have or are looking to buy a 2016
Honda Accord
then you know it has recently come off its original limited powertrain warranty. It’s even more important to keep your car’s oil topped off and changed regularly so it lasts you many years.
The 2016 Accord came available as a sedan or coupe, and it carries on the model’s long tradition of being a reliable daily driver that can deliver the occasional thrill, too. Besides its fun-driving nature, the Accord also has the quality of a long life expectancy. Hondas tend to be extremely reliable vehicles, and they maintain excellent resale values over time.
To keep your Honda running great—and to protect its resale price—make sure to maintain its engine oil properly. Check out this guide from the car owner’s

2016 Honda Accord engine oil capacity

The 2016 Honda Accord’s engine oil capacity is 4.4 quarts for 4-cylinder models and 4.5 quarts for 6-cylinder models. During an oil change, when all the old motor oil has been drained out, you or your service technician will add 4.4 or 4.5 quarts of new oil. This level will naturally drop somewhat between oil changes under normal driving conditions.
You can make sure your oil level is still in the proper range by checking it regularly—about once a month or with every other gas tank fill-up will do. Make sure the engine oil dipstick indicates that your oil level is sufficient. If it’s not, you might have to top it off a little before our next oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2016 Honda Accord need?

Honda recommends using Genuine Honda Premium Grade 0W-20 Motor Oil for your Accord. It’s best to stick with what your manufacturer recommends whenever possible, but if you need to add or change your oil and can’t get your hands on Genuine Honda motor oil, you can find the same oil type in other brands.
If you’re unclear about what exactly “0W-20” means and why it’s so important, here’s a brief explainer:
  • The 0W in your oil type refers to two things—the oil’s viscosity or liquid thickness in winter weather conditions. A viscosity level of 0 means that your engine oil has a very thin viscosity in cold weather.
  • The 20 is the rating for your oil’s viscosity when your car’s engine gets to 212° Fahrenheit, which is its normal operating temperature.

How often to change the oil on a 2016 Honda Accord

You’ll have to
change your oil
regularly because maintaining your oil takes more than just keeping the engine filled. Oil gets burned up and dirty, and it can damage your engine if it’s not routinely changed out.
According to Honda, your 2016 Accord will need an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. That range varies because of different driving styles and circumstances. It’s not always a good idea to push your oil change off until you hit another 5,000 miles. You might need one sooner than that.
Here are a few hints to look for that might indicate you need an oil change now:
  • Your engine oil’s color is black or dark brown instead of a lighter brown or amber color—which is what good engine oil should look like.
  • Instead of feeling smooth, your engine oil feels gritty.
  • Your car has an odd smell like burning oil.
  • Your car’s performance seems to have diminished.

How to change your oil and oil filter

When it’s time for an oil change, you can take it to a Honda dealership or another service center to get the job done. Or, if you’re up to a little hands-on work, you can do the job yourself at home with these instructions!
Before starting, you’ll need to make sure you have 4.4 or 4.5 quarts of Genuine Honda Premium Grade 0W-20 Motor Oil. You also need to gather together a filter wrench, a socket wrench, a new replacement oil filter, a drain pan, and a new oil drain plug gasket.
Get your engine started and let it run for about five minutes or so until it’s up to its normal operating temperature. Then, just follow these steps:
  • Unscrew the oil fill cap and set it aside.
  • Get under the car with your drain pan, filter wrench, socket wrench, new filter, and new gasket. Once you’re positioned under the engine, loosen and remove the oil drain bolt and the old oil drain plug gasket. Position the drain pan so the old oil will flow into it.
  • Remove the old oil filter and allow the oil to finish draining.
  • Install the new oil filter.
  • Replace the oil drain bolt, but this time, use the new oil drain plug gasket and dispose of the old one. Then, tighten the bolt down to 29 lb-ft.
  • Go back to the oil fill reservoir and add 4.2 quarts of the new oil.
  • Take the dipstick to check the engine oil, and replace the oil fill cap.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Take the drain pan full of old motor oil, and pour it into a sealed plastic container. Do not pour it on the ground or dispose of it in the trash. Old engine oil needs to be taken to an oil recycling center. This service is available at many parts stores and auto service centers.
