2017 Honda Accord engine oil capacity

Let’s get right down to it. How much oil does a 2017 Honda Accord need?
The 2017 Honda Accord’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine has an oil capacity of 4.4 quarts, or 4.2 liters
Keep in mind that the
engine’s displacement
is not the same as its oil capacity. Displacement is the amount of oil needed for the cylinders to function, while oil capacity is the amount of oil required for a proper oil change.
Engine displacement and oil capacity are two different things, so don’t assume that the numbers are interchangeable.

What kind of oil does a 2017 Honda Accord need?

Now that we’ve established just how much oil your Accord needs, let’s talk about the specific type of oil you’ll need to use. Not all engines use the same kind of oil, so don’t just waltz into the auto parts store and grab the first jug you see.
For your 2017 Accord, you need to use premium-grade 0W-20 oil per Honda’s recommendation. It's up to you whether you use synthetic or conventional oil.
What do those characters stand for, though? The numbers are a reference to the viscosity (thickness) of the oil, and the “W” indicates winter
The 0 preceding the “W” means that the oil has the appropriate viscosity at temperatures of 0°F and below, while the 20 indicates that it can maintain its integrity even at extremely hot temperatures up to 212°F. Using this kind of oil will reduce wear and tear on your engine
Just for reference, if you ever notice oil branded as “detergent motor oil,” that means it has additives to decrease the buildup of corrosion in your engine.
The owner's manual recommends
Genuine Honda 0W-20 Motor Oil

How often to change the oil on a 2017 Honda Accord

Alright, we’ve established what kind of oil your Accord needs and how much of it to use. There’s only one thing left to do:
change your oil and filter
.
Using synthetic oil or a synthetic blend means that more time and distance can pass before you need to change it compared to conventional oil. Experts suggest that synthetic oil should only be swapped out every 7,500 to 10,000 miles as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
(opposed to every 5,000 miles for conventional oil).
If you’re having trouble keeping track, just remember to check your oil regularly—like once a month or every other time you get gas. Also, be on the lookout for any signs that your oil needs to be changed, including the following:
  • Strange noises coming from the engine
  • You smell something unusual, like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Once you’ve recognized that your Accord is in need of an oil change, it’s time to gather your tools. You’ll need a socket wrench, drain pan, and filter wrench. Of course, you’ll also need to purchase a new oil filter as well as 5 quarts of premium 0W-20 engine oil
Start by letting your engine run for a few minutes until it reaches a normal operating temperature. Then, turn off the engine and follow,
open the hood of your car
, and follow these steps:
  • Take off the oil fill cap
  • Get underneath the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, allowing the old oil to leak into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and continue to let the oil drain
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
Don’t forget to use your dipstick to make sure that you added enough oil to the engine. The final step is to let the engine run for a few minutes and watch out for any leaks. You’ll know you’re in the clear when the
oil pressure light
on the dashboard switches off.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Now it’s time for everyone’s favorite part: the cleanup. Do not, under any circumstances, pour the dirty oil on the ground or throw it in the trash. Place the dirty oil in a sealed container and bring it to the nearest recycling center.

Don’t forget to maintain your car insurance policy, too

Congratulations, you just changed your own oil! Keeping up with scheduled oil changes (plus other maintenance) on your 2017 Honda Accord will help keep it on the road for a long time to come. Plus, changing your own oil helps you
