background
Nissan’s 2014 Murano has an oil capacity of 4.9 quarts with the oil filter. Nissan recommends using SAE 5W-30 oil with the API certification on it, without using any oil additives.
As a crossover, the 2014 Nissan Murano is a solid choice for car owners. It may not have the same visual impact as it did when it first debuted, but its fundamentals are strong and can make for an excellent driving experience. One part of owning a car like this—especially since it’s likely got some years on it by now—is maintenance.
Engine oil changes are a major part of regular maintenance. But, what you probably didn’t know was that it’s actually possible to do the oil change by yourself. That’s right—save a trip to the mechanic and some pocket money along with it. Before you do this though, you should read this guide to find out about your Murano’s oil capacity and other relevant information.

2014 Nissan Murano oil capacity

You will need roughly 4.9 quarts of engine oil (4.6 liters) to fill out your 2014 Murano’s oil capacity in an oil change. The exact measurement is 4 and ⅞ quartz, and that’s including the oil filter.
Your oil capacity is an important part of regular maintenance—it’s generally recommended you check your engine oil levels every couple of weeks (or every 1000 miles, whichever comes first). Nissan actually recommends you check these levels at least whenever you refuel.

What kind of oil does a 2014 Nissan Murano need?

Nissan recommends API- and SAE-certified oils—ideally, SAE 5W-30 oil. Nissan warns against using oil additives, which won’t be necessary if you’re using the right kind of oil.
That’s a lot to take in, so we’ll break it down step by step. API stands for the American Petroleum Institute. Any oil with an API certification and API service symbol should work with the Murano, so long as it means Nissan’s recommended viscosity.
Speaking of viscosity, the number to the left of the W represents how well the oil flows in cold temperatures, and the number on the right how well it flows in hot temperatures. SAE simply refers to the Society of Automotive Engineers, which developed the rating system to classify oil by its viscosity.
It’s important you meet these specifications, as choosing an oil viscosity other than the recommended amount would cause serious engine damage.
Nissan hasn’t highlighted any particular kind of oil, but here’s a list of API-certified SAE 5W-30 oil that should hit the mark:

How often to change the oil on a 2014 Nissan Murano

A lot of things can affect your recommended oil change interval—how you use your car and the quality of the engine oil will play a large part in this. As a baseline, Nissan recommends changing your engine oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
Keep in mind that the conditions you operate your Murano in can have an impact on oil change frequency. If you drive in dusty conditions, idle extensively, tow a trailer, or drive repeated short distances at cold temperatures, it could lead to more frequent oil and filter changes.
On top of this, don’t forget to regularly check your oil levels as well. After turning off the engine and waiting for at least ten minutes, use the dipstick to check your oil levels. If the oil is below the recommended range, you will have to fill as needed—though make sure you don’t overfill.
There are also some other signs that you might need an oil change:
  • Your check engine oil light is on
  • A noticeable drop in fuel efficiency (you’re using more gas than usual for routine trips)
  • Consistently stalling or overheating engine

How to change your oil and oil filter

Remember, while you can do oil changes yourself, it is a bit of a technical exercise and you should probably get some help if you’re a first-timer. You need a few tools, besides a jack and jack stand to raise your car:
  • A drain bolt wrench
  • An oil filter-removal wrench (you’ll likely have to buy this from a dealer)
  • A filter and drain pan to catch the old oil
Gloves and a funnel will also make the process less cumbersome. Of course, you’ll need a replacement filter and at least 4 ⅞ quarts of your chosen engine oil. Nissan actually suggests you get a genuine Nissan oil filter or equivalent to mimic the quality of their factory-issue filter.
Here’s what you need to do:
  1. Park the Murano on a level surface and apply the parking brake
  2. Start the engine and let it idle until it reaches operating temperature, before turning it off and waiting ten more minutes.
  3. Raise the car up using a floor jack and jack stand.
  4. Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap.
  5. Place a drain pan under the drain plug, and remove it using the wrench. Let the oil drain into the pan completely. Make sure to dispose of this waste oil properly.
  6. Remove the plastic cover over the oil filter, and loosen the oil filter with the oil filter wrench. Remove it using your hands.
  7. The oil filter will have oil in it too, so be sure to keep the drain pan under it as well.
  8. Wipe the oil filter mounting surface clean, coat the gasket on the new filter with clean engine oil and screw it back in; tighten it to an 11- to 15-ft-lb fit.
  9. Reinstall the plastic cover and the drain plug with a wrench; use a 22- to 29-ft-lb fit for the drain plug.
  10. Refill the engine oil through the filler opening and install the cap securely.
After you’re done, start the engine and check for any leakage around the drain plug and filter. Then, turn it off, wait 10 minutes and check the oil level—make sure you add more if necessary.
And that’s it! That’s all there is to know about changing the engine oil and filter on a 2014 Nissan Murano.
