There are a number of reasons the 2011 Nissan Murano is an outstanding crossover vehicle, from its responsive powertrain and precise handling to its smooth ride, and 200,000-mile lifespan with proper maintenance of course.

basic maintenance schedule
is the best way to ensure your Murano meets or even exceeds the 200,000-mile marker but the costs add up. Changing the engine oil yourself is the easiest way to cut
oil change costs
but you’ll need to know the engine oil type and capacity before you get started.

2011 Nissan Murano engine oil capacity

Your engine oil capacity is the amount of oil it takes to fill the engine in your vehicle, and it’s the first spec we’ll cover.
The 2011 Nissan Murano engine oil capacity is 4.9 quarts or 4.63 liters, with filter. The engine oil capacity can be found in your
owner’s manual
, but make sure you don’t mix it up with your engine’s displacement—that’s the volume of the cylinders rather than how much engine oil your Murano needs.
Engine oil capacity and engine displacement are easily confused with one another but are not interchangeable

What kind of oil does a 2011 Nissan Murano need?

The next spec you’ll need to know is the type of oil your 2011 Nissan Murano needs. For optimal performance, Nissan recommends
5W-30 full synthetic engine oil
for the 2011 Murano. If you are new to engine oil grades, we’ll break down what that actually means now.
Your 2011 Nissan Murano takes 5W-30 which is a low-viscosity oil that performs well in cold weather and reduces engine wear. The “W” stands for winter while the numbers in the oil grade signify the oil viscosity (that’s the thickness!) at low starting and high operating temperatures. The “5” indicates that the oil is less thick at low temperatures and the “30” indicates a low viscosity at high temperatures.

How often to change the oil on a Nissan Murano

Nissan recommends scheduling an oil change for your Murano every 5,000 miles or six months—whichever comes first.
How often you should actually change your oil may vary depending on your own driving habits and the area you reside. Your Murano may require more frequent oil changes if you drive more than 15,000 miles per year or less if you use it as an errand car.
So how do you know when your oil needs to be changed? Check your oil once a month or every other refuel and watch for these signs:
  • Engine oil that’s dark like the color of coffee or soda. Healthy engine oil should be closer to a caramel or amber color.
  • Your tailpipe produces
    exhaust smoke

  • Sluggish or reduced performance
  • Coarse, gritty, or textured motor oil
  • You smell oil in your car or burning while you drive
  • Strange knocking or
    loud engine noises

  • Low oil levels
If you notice any of the symptoms of bad oil mentioned above, your Nissan Murano is in need of an oil change sooner rather than later. You can either schedule the service with a technician in your area or perform the oil change yourself to save money.

How to change your oil and oil filter

So the time has come and your Murano needs an oil change. Don’t fret, we’ve got you covered. Just grab a socket and filter wrench, a drain pan, a replacement filter, and 4.9 quarts of 5W-30 motor oil to get started.
First, you’ll need to warm up your vehicle by running your engine until it reaches normal operating temperatures. This should only take about five minutes and then just follow these steps to change your oil and filter:
  • Place the drain pan under the drain plug
  • Remove the oil cap
  • Use a wrench to remove the drain plug and washer
  • Completely drain the oil into the drain pan
  • Replace the old filter with the new one
  • Re-install the drain plug and washer
  • Fill the engine with the new oil through the filler opening
  • Screw the oil cap tightly to secure it in place
Once you’ve completed these steps, use the dipstick to check your oil levels and start your engine to make sure there are no leaks around the drain plug or oil filter. You’ll know you’ve performed the oil change correctly if the oil warning lights have disappeared from your dashboard.
However, your work isn’t finished just yet. You need to pour the old oil into a sealed container and check your local regulations for proper disposal
