How to change your oil and oil filter
When it’s time to change your engine oil, you can take it to a shop or, with the right equipment, you can do the job pretty easily at home. Here’s how.
First, collect all the materials you’ll need. That includes 7.7 quarts of SAE 5W-20 oil, plus a filter wrench, socket wrench, replacement filter, drain pan, and new oil drain plug gasket. When everything is ready, just follow these steps:
- Start your Ford F-150 and let the engine run for about five minutes. Then shut it off and pop the hood open.
- Take off the oil fill cap and set it somewhere safe.
- Go under the truck and get underneath the engine, where you can remove the old oil drain bolt and gasket. Let the oil drain into the drain pan.
- Take off the old oil filter and let the oil continue draining.
- When the old oil is done draining, install the new oil filter.
- Replace the oil drain bolt using your new oil drain plug gasket. Tighten the bolt to 29 lb-ft.
- Add 7.7 quarts of the new engine oil and replace the cap.
After you’ve finished, you can use the dipstick to make sure you added the right amount of oil. Finally, run your engine for a few minutes to make sure the
oil pressure light
is off and there aren’t any leaks. Dump the old oil from the drain pan into a sealed container and take it to an oil recycling service. Many auto parts stores and service centers offer oil recycling.
