2017 Ford F-150 5.0-liter V8 engine oil capacity

First things first, how much engine oil does a 2017 Ford F-150 need?
The 5.0-liter V8 engine on your F-150 has an oil capacity of 6.0 quarts or 5.7 liters. While they seem similar, the 5.0-liter engine refers to the
engine's displacement
—how much volume the cylinders take up. What you need to know is the engine oil capacity—how much oil the engine can hold, since this is the amount of engine oil you need to buy.

What kind of oil does a 2017 Ford F-150 5.0-liter V8 need?

Now that we know how much oil you need, let's talk about what type. Since we are all looking for ways to save money, it can be tempting to buy the cheapest bottle of oil on the shelf, but that is not what will keep your F-150 running at its best in the long run. Instead, Ford recommends Motorcraft® 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil.
What does all that mean? The whole point of engine oil is to lubricate and protect the engine. Since every machine is different, they require different viscosity (thickness) levels to function properly. The W stands for winter, so 5W is the viscosity grade for cold weather and cold engine starts. 20 is the viscosity grade when the engine is at its normal temperature.
There are several brands and grades of oil to choose from. Since Ford recommends using synthetic over conventional oil, meaning you can choose a full or blended synthetic oil. Here are some popular options that other Ford owners prefer:

How often to change oil on a Ford F-150 5.0-liter V8

To save the most money, you need to know how often to change your oil. Ford recommends changing the oil every 7,500-10,000 miles as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
. However, this is just a suggestion.
Ford assumes that you are selecting the Motorcraft full synthetic motor oil. If you choose a synthetic blend to save money, you might need to change your oil at the 5,000-mile mark. On the other hand, if you select a high mileage oil, you may not have to change it for 20,000 miles.
To make sure you change your oil at the right time, check the level and quality of your oil every other time you fill up for gas. When you do, look for the following signs an oil change is needed:
  • Brown or black oil(Clean oil is light brown or amber)
  • Coarse or gritty oil
  • Unfamiliar engine sounds
  • Smoke or burning smells
  • Performance changes

How to change your oil and oil filter

Let's say at your last fuel up, you noticed that your oil color had darkened and was gritty! Here are the materials you will need to have on hand to complete that oil change:
  • Socket wrench
  • Filter wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Replacement filter
  • New washer
  • 5W-20 full synthetic motor oil
Oil changes don't take as long
when the oil is warm, so run your F-150 run for about five minutes.
Once your truck is heated up and ready to go, shut off the engine, pop the hood, and follow these next steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Crawl underneath your truck and place the drain pan under the engine
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer, and allow the oil to drain freely into the pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and install the new one
  • Use the new washer and tighten
  • Fill the engine with the new oil and replace the cap
To ensure all went well, use the dipstick to confirm the oil level and run the engine to check for leaks. The
oil pressure light
may take a few minutes to turn off. And that’s all there is to it!
Don’t forget to be environmentally responsible with the dirty engine oil! Pour the old oil into resealable containers and drop it off at your local recycling center or an auto parts store with an oil recycling program.
