Overview: what is a Volkswagen extended warranty?

If you
buy a brand-new car
(or sometimes a certified pre-owned vehicle), it usually comes with a manufacturer’s warranty. These warranties serve as the automaker’s promise to cover repairs needed to address defective parts or faulty workmanship. Volkswagen’s basic and powertrain warranties cover four years or 50,000 miles, along with two years, or 20,000 miles of complimentary maintenance.
Extended warranties are exactly what they sound like: warranty contracts that lengthen your vehicle’s original warranty. Volkswagen’s extended warranties offer three different levels of protection that range up to 10 years or 150,000 miles.
If you’re interested in purchasing an extended warranty from Volkswagen, you can buy it any time before your factory warranty expires.

Volkswagen Drive Easy Vehicle Service Protection Plans: coverage and cost

Volkswagen offers three Drive Easy Protection Plans with varying tiers of coverage. From least to most coverage, these include:
  • Powertrain: Covers your vehicle’s engine, transmission, transaxle or transfer case, drive axle(s), and certain hybrid/electric parts
  • Gold: Includes Powertrain coverage plus front and rear suspension, climate control, fuel, electrical, and certain additional hybrid/electric parts
  • Platinum: Provides coverage for all mechanical parts of your vehicle unless specifically listed as “not covered” (including spark plugs, wiper blades, upholstery, etc.)
These plans are accepted at all participating Volkswagen dealers or other authorized service providers across the U.S. When you purchase an extended warranty, you can
choose a deductible
amount of $0, $100, and $250 per visit. These might sound expensive, but they’re much cheaper than paying for most repairs outright.
Any Volkswagen Protect plan is accepted at all Volkswagen and Lincoln dealerships in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Although you may need to pay a small deductible (usually $100) on some repairs, extended warranty coverage can drastically reduce the cost of unexpected repairs.
Volkswagen Vehicle Service Protection plans include more than just
car repairs
. These plans also come with the following benefits:
  • Genuine Volkswagen OEM (or OEM-approved) parts and service
  • 24-hour roadside assistance, including battery service, fuel or fluid delivery, flat tire assistance, and lock-out assistance up to $100 per event
  • Towing reimbursement of up to $100 to the nearest dealer or authorized provider
  • Rental car reimbursement of up to $35 per day for up to 10 days
  • Trip interruption coverage up to $200 per day for up to five days for a maximum of $1,000 per occurrence
All Volkswagen VSP plans are transferable for a $50 fee if you sell your car to a private party. You can also cancel your VSP plan anytime after 30 days for a $50 fee.

What’s covered

Picking the best-fitting Volkswagen Drive Easy Protection Plan for you will depend on your budget and how much coverage you want.
The most basic option, the Powertrain plan, extends coverage for your vehicle’s most vital parts—and the most expensive parts to repair! These parts include:
  • All engine parts
  • All transmission parts
  • Transaxle
  • Transfer case
  • All drive axles
  • Oil pump
  • Select electric/hybrid components
Don’t write this warranty option off just because it’s the most limited coverage plan. Volkswagen’s powertrain protection could save you a substantial amount if you run into issues with the covered parts. For instance,
replacing an oil pump O-ring
could cost you up to $500, and an
exhaust manifold repair
could run you as much as $900.
The most comprehensive protection plan is the Platinum level option, providing coverage for everything from the steering and brakes to the navigation and audio systems. This plan is also called “Platinum exclusionary coverage,” meaning the warranty will generally cover a part unless it’s explicitly stated as “not covered” in the fine print. Some of these include wiper blades, body panels, trim pieces, spark plugs, and upholstery.
The mid-range Gold plan is a mix of the other two coverage levels, including protection for the powertrain components plus the following:
  • Climate control components (e.g. A/C compressor and condenser)
  • Shocks (e.g. springs and dampers)
  • Front and rear suspension (e.g. struts, ball joints, bushings)
  • Fuel system (e.g. tank, pump, filter, and injectors)
  • Electrical system (e.g. starter and alternator)

What isn’t

Warranty coverage provides peace of mind, but it won’t cover every possible repair your Volkswagen might need. For example, your VW Drive Easy Protection Plan won’t cover the following:
  • Things covered by your auto insurance: e.g. non-moving body parts, glass, sheet metal, paint, etc.
  • Things covered by required maintenance: e.g. batteries, cables, belts, hoses, tires, and lights
  • Anything caused by improper and unreasonable use: e.g. off-roading, drag racing, etc.
  • Modified or custom parts: e.g. an aftermarket sound system
  • Other components: fabric, upholstery, carpets, dash pad, wiper blades, etc.
For extra protection, Volkswagen offers additional protection plans for specific situations, including the following:
  • Term Protection Maintenance Plan: Covers parts liable to wear and tear, like brake pads or windshield wipers
  • Guaranteed Asset Protection: This is Volkswagen’s version of
    gap insurance
  • Lease-End Protection: Waives up to $10,000 of excess wear-and-tear charges on your leased VW vehicle
  • Tire and Wheel Protection with optional Cosmetic Coverage: Repairs damaged tires and wheels and damage to cosmetic elements
  • Theft Protection: This is VW’s addendum to your
    new car replacement insurance
in the event of a theft
  • Dent Protection: Repairs dents and dings without harming the paint
  • Windshield Protection: Fixes minor chips and cracks
  • Key Protection: Replaces keys or fobs if lost, damaged, or stolen
  • Multi-Coverage Protection: Includes Tire and Wheel Protection, Optional Cosmetic Coverage, Dent Protection, Windshield Protection, and Key Protection
All new Volkswagen vehicles also come standard with VW’s Scheduled Carefree Maintenance, which includes complimentary maintenance for the first two years or 20,000 miles of your vehicle.

Duration

When you choose a Volkswagen extended warranty plan, you can choose a coverage period of up to 10 years and 150,000 miles with all three coverage levels. This length includes the original VW People First factory warranty of 4 years and 50,000 miles, so the extended warranty kicks in after the factory warranty expires.

Cost

The price of your Volkswagen Drive Easy Protection Plan will depend on the length of your warranty, deductible, coverage level, and your specific Volkswagen dealer. Generally, you can expect to pay between $1,800 and $3,500 for your extended warranty.
The longer and more comprehensive your coverage level, the more expensive your plan will be. Lower deductibles will also drive up the price of your warranty, but opting for a higher deductible can decrease the overall cost. With Volkswagen, you can choose between a deductible of $0, $100 disappearing, $100, and $250 per visit.

Is it worth getting a Volkswagen extended warranty?

Whether or not you should purchase an extended warranty comes down to your personal preferences. These warranties can go a long way in providing you peace of mind when it comes to major repair costs, but the price may not be worth it. Before you buy a Volkswagen extended warranty, be sure you review all possible options and negotiate a fair price with your dealership
Mechanical breakdown insurance
(MBI) could be a good alternative to an extended warranty, and it could be available through your insurance provider. After your original factory warranty expires, MBI can help with costs from mechanical repairs that aren’t due to wear and tear—
