Should You Get a Chrysler Extended Warranty?

If you’re considering purchasing a Chrysler extended warranty, you need to check out our review of coverage options and pricing.
Written by Amber Reed
The Chrysler extended warranty kicks in after your original manufacturer warranty expires. It covers some vehicle repairs for up to seven years or 100,000 miles and usually costs between $1,500 and $2,500.
If you’ve ever purchased a new vehicle, you’re probably familiar with receiving a bunch of spam calls trying to sell you an “extended warranty” before it’s too late. While the calls can be annoying, purchasing an extended warranty can be an appealing option for many car owners. These protection plans cover the cost of repairing factory defects and manufacturing issues that happen after the term of your car’s original warranty coverage is up.

Overview: what is a Chrysler extended warranty?

In most cases, the total cost of a new vehicle includes a warranty—a protection plan that covers the cost of repairing factory defects or other issues that occur as a result of the manufacturing of your car. Every new Chrysler comes with a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Car buyers who choose to purchase an extended warranty are provided with additional coverage that goes beyond the limits of their vehicle’s original warranty. Chrysler offers three extended protection plans that range from a basic five-year/60,000-mile plan to lifetime coverage.
You’ll have the option of adding an extended warranty when you purchase a new or certified used Chrysler, but you can also buy an extended protection plan at any time during the life of your car.

Chrysler extended warranties: coverage and cost

Chrysler offers three extended warranty plans through Mopar, Chrysler’s official parts, service, and customer care division. Here’s a rundown of the automaker’s three extended warranty options.
  • Powertrain Care: Coverage for up to 400 components related to your vehicle’s engine, transmission, and drivetrain.
  • Added Care Plus: Takes care of costs associated with repairs to your car’s powertrain, transmission, drivetrain, steering, cooling system, fuel system, brakes, air conditioning, and electrical systems. Covers up to 850 parts.
  • Maximum Care: Offers comprehensive coverage for 5,000 car parts, including your powertrain, transmission, drivetrain, steering, cooling system, fuel system, brakes, air conditioning, electrical systems, interior mechanisms, and security features.
To use your extended warranty plan, bring your vehicle to the service department of any Chrysler dealership in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Once your technician diagnoses the problem and determines it meets the terms of your extended warranty plan, you might need to pay a small deductible—usually between $50 and $200—but your total cost will be significantly lower than the original price of the repair.
You can choose to pay for a Chrysler extended warranty plan in full or finance it over 24 months at 0% interest. Every plan offers guaranteed coverage for any car repair that meets your warranty terms and includes access to 24-hour roadside assistance, a $35-per-day car rental allowance, and up to $1,000 of trip interruption protection to cover the cost of lodging and food in the event your vehicle becomes inoperable while you’re more than 100 miles away from home.
Except for the lifetime coverage plans, all of Chrysler’s extended warranties are transferable. This means purchasing an extended warranty can be a great way to increase the resale value of your car since it transfers to the new owner when you sell the vehicle.

What’s covered?

Figuring out which Chrysler extended warranty plan is right for you simply depends on the coverage you want. If you just want coverage for the most crucial repairs, the Powertrain Care plan might be all you need. This plan includes coverage for up to 400 parts, including:
  • Internal engine parts
  • Internal transmission parts
  • Timing case, chain, belt, gears, and sprockets
  • Transfer case, power transfer unit, and all internal parts
  • Transmission case and all internal parts
  • Seals and gaskets for all covered parts
  • Intake and exhaust manifolds
  • Front/rear axles and all internal parts
  • Oil pan and pump
Although this plan offers limited coverage compared to Chrysler’s other two extended warranty plans, it still offers serious savings since powertrain repairs are often very expensive. For instance, an
oil pump O-ring replacement
could cost as much as $300 to $500, and an
exhaust manifold
repair might run somewhere between $500 and $900.
The Added Care Plus plan is Chrysler’s mid-range option, which covers everything the Powertrain Care plan does, plus other components related to your brakes, suspension, and electrical systems. This plan includes a total of 850 parts, including:
  • Power steering pump
, housing, and all internal parts
  • Brake calipers
    and pistons
  • Suspension struts, shocks, and springs
  • Air conditioning compressor and condenser
  • Starter motor and ignition coil
But if you’re looking to optimize your warranty protection, the Maximum Care plan could be right for you. With this plan, you get comprehensive coverage for 5,000 parts. It includes everything in the Powertrain Care and Added Care Plus plans, and adds protection for interior mechanisms like your power-adjustable seats, safety and security systems, luxury features, and more.

What isn’t?

Even the Maximum Care plan won’t cover every possible
car repair
. Here’s a rundown of what’s not covered under your Chrysler extended warranty, no matter which level of coverage you choose.
  • Damage to your car that was the result of an accident, such as body damage or broken glass.
  • Routine maintenance like oil changes, batteries, brake pads/rotors, cables, belts, tires, or lights.
  • Damage caused by abuse or improper care such as off-roading or street racing.
  • Any modified or customized parts like aftermarket rims or a sound system.
  • Certain other components like upholstery, carpeting, wiper blades, tow hitches, etc.
Although tires aren’t covered under the extended warranty plans, Chrysler does offer separate Road Hazard Tire and Wheel Coverage to take care of the costs associated with tire or wheel repair if they are damaged due to road conditions. This plan can only be purchased for Chrysler vehicles made within the last 10 model years with less than 100,000 miles.

Duration

The exact length of your Chrysler extended warranty will depend on the level of coverage you choose. The most common option is seven years or 100,000 miles, but plans can range from as little as five years or 60,000 miles to lifetime coverage.
Once you choose your extended warranty plan and coverage duration, your protection term begins when your original manufacturer's warranty expires. It lasts until you meet either the year or mileage limit specified in your contract. If you’re purchasing an extended warranty plan for a certified used Chrysler vehicle, or a Chrysler vehicle that’s already out of warranty, coverage begins as soon as you sign up for your plan.
Here are the term limits available for each of Chrysler’s extended warranties.
  • Powertrain Care. Available as a five-year/60,000-mile, seven-year/100,000-mile, or lifetime coverage plan.
  • Added Care Plus. The following plans are available: five year/60,000 miles, five years/75,000 miles, five years/85,000 miles, five years/100,000 miles, five years/125,000 miles, eight years/60,000 miles, eight years/75,000 miles, eight years/85,000 miles, eight years/100,000 miles, eight years/125,000 miles, and lifetime coverage.
  • Maximum Care. Available as an eight-year/120,000-mile or lifetime coverage plan.

Cost

The exact amount you’ll pay for a Chrysler extended warranty depends on the amount of coverage and the duration you choose, plus other factors like your deductible and how much you negotiate with your Chrysler salesperson. But on average, most Chrysler customers pay between $1,500 and $2,500 for an extended warranty plan.
Of course, the more coverage you get, the more expensive your plan will be. The Maximum Care plan costs quite a bit more than the Powertrain Care plan since it covers an additional 4,600 components. Similarly, a lifetime coverage plan costs considerably more than one with a shorter term limit.
All Chrysler extended warranties include a standard deductible—the amount of money you’ll pay out of pocket for any warranty-covered repair. This amount depends on your plan and can range from $0 to $200. A plan with a lower deductible is more expensive overall, but you’ll pay less for each repair.

Is it worth getting a Chrysler extended warranty?

Ultimately, whether or not you should get a Chrysler extended warranty comes down to your priorities, and in some cases, your budget. For some drivers, the added peace of mind that comes with having some vehicle repairs covered can be very valuable. For others, it may not be worth the extra expense.
If you need more information on your extended warranty options and prices, give your preferred Chrysler dealership a call.
If you like the idea of extra coverage for vehicle repairs, but don’t want to work with a dealership,
mechanical breakdown insurance
(MBI) can be an excellent alternative. This type of coverage is available through your auto insurance provider, and—like an extended warranty—helps cover the cost of certain repairs after your manufacturer’s warranty expires.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
