Drivers in
Utah
can renew their driver’s license online or in person, depending on their eligibility. Each license renewal has a nonrefundable fee of $52, or $27 for those 65 and older.

How to renew your driver’s license in Utah

In Utah, you can renew your license either online or in person at your local driver's license office. Drivers can renew their license up to six months prior to the expiration date located on the right of their driver’s license number, above the issued date.

Renewing your license online

Drivers can only complete an online renewal if their last cycle was completed in person at the DMV. To complete the renewal online, you’ll have to visit
Utah’s driver’s license portal
. You should receive a letter or email detailing the process of online renewal, as well as a PIN number you’ll need to apply.
During this process, you’ll be asked to provide the following:

If they received a renewal notice and PIN either via email or letter

If they want an updated driver’s license photo

The PIN number attached to your renewal notice

Payment fee of $52 (or $27, if you’re over 65)
After completing the online renewal process and submitting the payment fee, a PDF of your temporary license will automatically download to the computer you’re using. You can print out this temporary license to use until your new one comes in.
If you’re 65 or older, or have poor vision (less than 20/40), you will be required to pass an eye test. Drivers are required to schedule an appointment through the
Utah Driver License Division
(DLD) before their application can be processed.

Renewing your license in person

Along with renewing your Utah driver’s license online, you can also
book an appointment
to renew it in person at your local DMV—however, the process is a little different.
All drivers who renew their license in person will be required to:

If they want an updated driver’s license photo
If your license expired more than six months ago, if you’ve had more than six citations in eight years, or if your license has been suspended or revoked, you’ll be required to take an open-book
written knowledge test
before getting your license renewed.
This test consists of 25 questions and can only be taken twice in one day. After three attempts, drivers will have to pay a secondary fee to retake the exam.

What to bring when renewing your Utah driver’s license

When renewing your driver’s license in person, you will need to bring the following
required documentation
:
If you’re a US citizen:
  • Your current Utah driver’s license
  • Your social security number
  • Proof of identity (birth certificate, passport, permanent resident card)
  • Proof of address (bank statements, court documents, vehicle titles)
If you hold lawful status, but aren’t a US citizen:
  • Your social security number or a W-2 form/SSA-1099 form
  • Proof of identity (employment authorization document, I-766, 1-94, or 1-688B forms, passport, valid visa)
  • Proof of legal presence (pending or approved application for asylum, status adjustment, or temporary protected status)
  • Proof of address (bank statements, court documents, vehicle titles)
Those who are applying for a license renewal for the first time after receiving their learner’s permit must also supply proof of driving experience—whether they’re a US citizen or only hold lawful status. This could be evidence of completion for a driver’s education course, or driving privilege issued in another state or country.
If you’ve lost your Utah driver’s license and are looking for a replacement, you will need to bring two proofs of documentation from the list above. This also applies to lapsed and duplicate licenses, and drivers who have recently undergone a name change.
Note: The Utah DMV/DLD will not accept faxed or photocopied documents.

When to renew your driver’s license in Utah

In Utah, drivers can file for a license renewal under the following circumstances:

If they received a renewal notice and PIN either via email or letter
icon
If they want an updated driver’s license photo
icon
If they’re reinstating their license after a suspension or revocation
Once you’ve completed either the online or in person process and paid the renewal fee, it will take between four to six weeks to receive your new license. It will come in the mail, and will last for five years

Is there a grace period for renewing a driver’s license in Utah?

The grace period for driver’s license renewals in Utah is the six month period before your license expiration date. If you miss this date, your license will no longer be valid, and you’ll have to apply for a reinstatement.
Currently, there is no grace period for changing an out-of-state license to a Utah driver’s license. The driver must either remain in Utah for six months or longer, register a motor vehicle with the state, and become gainfully employed to receive a Utah license.
If drivers know they will be out of state at the time of renewal, they’re to contact the DMV and apply for an early renewal prior to their leave.
