If you need to file an
SR-22
to get back on the road, Progressive can help. High-risk drivers can get car insurance, SR-22 filing, or FR-44 filing via this major insurance company.
Your
car insurance
rates as a high-risk driver are probably higher than someone with a clean driving record. However, you can still shop around to find the best possible rate given your situation. Progressive is just one of several big insurance companies that offer SR-22 filing. Here’s what you need to know about this kind of policy.

Does Progressive offer SR-22 auto insurance?

Yes. Progressive can help you
file an SR-22 form
to get you back on the road after a serious traffic violation. Call 1-866-749-7436 to speak with a Progressive agent. If you’re already a Progressive policyholder, you can request the SR-22 filing inside your customer portal on the Progressive app.
It’s important to understand that an SR-22 is not a type of car insurance. You will need car insurance coverage in addition to the SR-22 form.
If you carry car insurance with Progressive, you can find your filing fee itemized and included in your policy cost. In most cases, the entire filing fee is built into your first month’s insurance payment. The SR-22 filing fee is approximately $25.
To legally drive, you must purchase coverage that meets your state's minimum liability insurance requirements. You may also wish to purchase
collision
and
comprehensive insurance
in addition to basic
liability coverage
If you don’t have your own car but still need to show financial responsibility, you can purchase
non-owner insurance
.
Depending on your state, an SR-22 will either be filed electronically or by mail.
Depending on your situation, you may have to continue your SR-22 filing for three years or more. Drivers who require SR-22 filing are considered higher-risk drivers, which means they typically pay more for insurance
Once your SR-22 filing requirement is complete, you can
cancel Progressive insurance
if you find a lower price with a different insurance carrier or keep your policy (hopefully at a cheaper rate). It might be worth shopping around with multiple companies at this point, to make sure you’re getting the lowest possible price given your new risk status.

What is an SR-22 for car insurance?

An SR-22 is a form or certificate that indicates your financial responsibility. Drivers who have committed a serious traffic violation—or let their insurance lapse—may require SR-22 coverage before being allowed back on the road.
Here are some common reasons that a driver could be required to file an SR-22:
The DMV will notify you if you need to file an SR-22 or you might find out during traffic court. Note that SR-22 is also known as an
FR-44
in some states like
Florida
and
Virginia
.
An SR-22 is not automatically removed from your insurance policy once your time is up. Instead, you need to ask Progressive to remove it; once that’s done, you may experience a decrease in your premium!

Does Progressive offer non-owner SR-22 insurance?

Yes. If you don’t own a car but still need an SR-22, you can ask Progressive to file non-owner SR-22 insurance on your behalf. Non-owner car insurance is beneficial for people who rent or borrow other people’s vehicles.

Does Progressive have FR-44 insurance?

Yes. Florida and Virginia have something called an
FR-44
, which is similar to an SR-22 but for more severe violations.
The FR-44 form carries higher liability requirements for car insurance coverage. For example, in Florida, FR-22 drivers must carry $100,000 per person per accident and $300,000 per accident. That’s a much higher coverage amount than
Florida car insurance laws
mandate for standard drivers.
Florida and Virginia also use the SR-22, but it’s used for drivers who have minor violations.
Progressive is able to file both FR-44 and SR-22 forms.

How much does an SR-22 from Progressive cost?

While the filing of the form will cost about $25, your car insurance premiums with Progressive will depend on the reason you need an SR-22, your zip code, how much coverage you need, your state’s minimum requirements, and other rating factors related to your driver profile.
In general, you can expect to pay more for Progressive insurance than a driver with a
clean driving record
. A DUI conviction is among the traffic tickets that have the
greatest effect on your car insurance
. You'll pay extremely high rates if you need SR-22 because of a DUI conviction.

Which insurance company has the cheapest SR-22 coverage?

Progressive is a good option for drivers with traffic violations on record, but it’s smart to get quotes from multiple companies.
USAA
,
GEICO
, or
State Farm
may offer better rates.
Because high premiums are associated with SR-22 drivers, you have a lot to lose if you don’t shop around. Be sure to look for
car insurance quotes online
before you sign up with a provider to ensure that you’re paying the lowest possible price.
