To get a rebuilt title in Wyoming, you’ll need to apply for a salvage title, repair the vehicle, apply for a rebuilt title at your local county clerk’s office, and pay a $15 rebuilt title fee.
When a car is deemed a “total loss” by an insurance company (i.e., when damage to it exceeds 75% of its cash value), that’s usually the end of the line. The car will likely be taken to a salvage yard and stripped of its usable parts.
In some circumstances, there’s another option—repairing the vehicle and converting it from a salvage vehicle to one with a rebuilt title.
If you want to restore a totaled car in Wyoming, you’ll need a rebuilt title. The process can be long and confusing, so

What is a rebuilt title?

A
rebuilt title
confirms that a car that was once deemed a total loss by an insurance company or third-party agency has been repaired, inspected, and is now fit to drive.
In order for a rebuilt title to be issued, a vehicle must first have a
salvage title
. A salvage title attests to the vehicle’s totaled status. It
will be replaced
with a rebuilt title once repairs to the vehicle have been made and an inspection has been completed.

Does my car need a rebuilt title?

If you want to drive or sell a car with a salvage title, you will likely need to replace it with a rebuilt title.
You can try to sell a car with a salvage title to a car fanatic or mechanic, but average buyers are generally advised to steer clear of cars with salvage titles. This is because, in their current condition, salvage vehicles cannot be driven safely and are uninsurable.
Buyers are more interested in buying cars with rebuilt titles. A rebuilt title proves the vehicle is safe to drive. It won’t erase the car’s history of being totaled in the past, but it means the car has been repaired and is now operational and insurable.

The process for securing a rebuilt title in Wyoming is not for the faint of heart! It can be a fulfilling experience to repair a salvage vehicle, but it’s one that requires a significant time commitment and financial investment.

Apply for the salvage title

  • The car’s title in your name
  • Confirmation of your car’s totaled status, such as a letter from your insurance company confirming your total loss claim settlement or an appraisal from an independent agency
  • $15 salvage title fee
You will need to bring the above documentation and fee to the county clerk’s office that issued the car’s original title
If everything is accounted for, you will receive your salvage title.

Make the necessary repairs to your vehicle

As you repair the vehicle, remember to document all the parts used. Keep all receipts and bills of sale, as well.
After the repairs are completed, you will need to apply for a rebuilt salvage vehicle decal before you apply for the rebuilt title.
