You can cancel USAA auto insurance at any time—but make sure it’s the right move

If you’re a USAA member, you can cancel your policy any time you want—even if you’ve purchased a policy recently. While you don’t need to wait for your renewal date, you do need to have a new auto insurance policy in place before you deactivate your current coverage.
Keep in mind: Even if you are being discharged from the military, you can keep your car insurance with USAA. Their benefits are available to active-duty military personnel or veterans, their spouses, and children.
Before you call USAA to start the cancellation process, make sure you’re ready to cancel by looking into the terms and conditions of cancellation. You should:
USAA doesn’t typically charge any fees if you cancel your USAA auto insurance policy, but it’s still a good idea to ask your insurance agent if anything will be applied.
Like most car insurance companies, USAA will refund unused insurance premiums if you paid for your coverage in full. The specific amount you get back will vary, so contact USAA before you cancel to ask about your potential refund.
If you cancel your policy with USAA and don’t have a new policy set up, USAA will report a coverage lapse to the DMV. Before you call to cancel, have the name of your new insurance provider ready to avoid confusion.
Canceling your USAA policy mid-term is a good idea if:
  • You have a lower rate lined up from a different auto insurance company
  • You have
    a bundling offer
from another insurer for auto and homeowner or auto and renters insurance
  • You are
    selling your vehicle
and don’t intend to own a car in the future
If you’re in your first policy term with USAA or don’t have new car insurance coverage set up, don’t cancel immediately.

Instead, take some time to research
car insurance quotes
and decide if canceling will save you insurance costs in the long term.
You can compare USAA’s car insurance rates, coverage options, and coverage limits with real quotes from dozens of other providers in the
app—and activate your policy right away if you’re ready to cancel with USAA.

Don’t drop insurance when you sell your car

Unless you’re going to stop driving altogether, you’ll need a new insurance policy set up before you cancel your USAA car insurance policy. Make sure the new coverage starts exactly when your USAA coverage ends. A lapse in your coverage could set you up for high insurance rates, even if you didn’t own a vehicle during that period. Instead of canceling outright, reach out to your USAA insurance agent to ask about converting your current policy into
a non-owner policy
when you sell your vehicle. You’ll retain temporary liability coverage until you get a new car and earn a much better rate on new coverage when you’re back on the road.
