You can cancel your policy with the
Erie Insurance Exchange
by phone, via email, or in person. You don’t have to wait until your policy renews—you can cancel your
car insurance
at any time.

There are two ways to cancel your Erie car insurance policy

  • Call or email your local Erie agent. Look on your policy documents or the
    Erie website
to find your insurance agent’s name and phone number or email address. Then, contact them directly to let them know you want to cancel your policy.
  • Call Erie’s customer service line at 1-800-458-0811. You can reach a representative from Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–11 p.m. EST.
When you contact Erie to speak to an agent, be prepared to provide your name, policy number, and the date you want your policy to end. If you’ve purchased another insurance policy, make sure your Erie cancellation date is the same date that your new policy will start.
You’ll also need to provide the names of everyone listed on the policy—but note that only the primary policyholder can actually cancel the policy.
You may be asked to sign a document or mail a written request to finalize the cancellation process. Once the request is processed, you should receive confirmation from Erie that the policy has been canceled.

Does Erie charge a cancellation fee?

No, the Erie Insurance company won’t charge you a cancellation fee for ending your auto insurance policy early.

Can you get a refund from Erie if you paid in full?

Yes—when you cancel your Erie insurance, you’ll be refunded for the unused portion of any premiums you’ve already paid.
When you call to cancel, your insurance agent will let you know how much of a refund you’re entitled to, how long it should take to process, and how you’ll receive the refund.

You can cancel your Erie insurance at any time

Erie policyholders may cancel their coverage at any time and for any reason, but some of the most common reasons for cancellation include:

Finding cheap car insurance with another provider
icon
Moving to a state where Erie doesn’t operate
icon
Finding better coverage options for bundling insurance products, like homeowners insurance or renters coverage, with auto insurance with another carrier
Whatever your reason, you don’t have to wait until the end of your policy to cancel. You can cancel at any time, and you’ll be refunded any of your unused premium that you’ve already paid.
If you want to cancel your Erie insurance because you think your insurance rates are too high, make sure you secure a policy with a new car insurance company before you cancel your old one. Having even a short gap in your insurance coverage—known as an
insurance lapse
—will cause your rates to be much higher when you buy car insurance again.

The best way to find a lower price on your car insurance is to compare insurance quotes from several different companies. If you shop for insurance with
Jerry
, you’ll be able to browse a personalized selection of the lowest quotes taken from a comparison of dozens of companies.
You’ll also be able to adjust coverage levels, choose deductibles, and schedule the start date for your policy to ensure you don’t experience a lapse in coverage.
If you plan to drive again in the future, don’t cancel your insurance just because you’re selling your car. Instead, switch to a non-owner insurance policy so you can maintain continuous coverage and avoid a lapse in your insurance history. When you get a new car, you can easily switch back to a standard policy.

Is Erie Insurance the best company to insure your car?

Unfortunately, there’s no one provider that offers the best coverage for every driver. Erie may be the best policy for you now, but factors affecting who your ideal carrier will be are changing constantly—something as simple as an out-of-state move, could render Erie ineffective for you, as it only operates in 12 states—Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin—and the District of Columbia.
To ensure you always have the best coverage with the company best suited to your driving profile, be sure to reshop your coverage at each policy renewal or anytime you experience a major life change.

Why do I need to cancel my insurance?

Policyholders often cancel insurance for simple reasons, such as finding lower rates elsewhere, or moving to a location where their current provider doesn’t offer coverage. However, you might also need to cancel insurance to take advantage of things like multi-policy discounts if you also carry life insurance, business insurance, or home insurance with another provider.
