WHY YOU CAN TRUST JERRY
Jerry partners with more than 50 insurance companies, but our content is independently researched, written, and fact-checked by our team of editors and agents. We aren’t paid for reviews or other content.
Students under 25 years old who maintain a B average in school may qualify for Farm Bureau’s good student discount.
If you’re under the age of 25 and own a car, you’ve probably had some trouble finding a
cheap car insurance
policy that’s got all the coverage you need. That’s because car insurance providers calculate premiums based on risk factors, like where you live, what kind of car you drive, and, importantly, your age.
And the numbers don’t lie: drivers under 25 are statistically more high-risk to insure, which can drive your premium up.
However, there’s still hope! In fact, if you’re in school, your report card may actually be your golden ticket to some sweet
car insurance
savings. And if you have (or are thinking about getting) a policy from Farm Bureau, read on to learn how to qualify for and claim your good student discount.

How to get Farm Bureau’s good student discount

A glowing report card can not only earn you a couple of extra bucks in allowance money from your parents but can actually help lower your Farm Bureau car insurance premiums as well!
Exact rates vary, and you’ll need to contact your Farm Bureau agent in order to redeem the discount and get all the right paperwork in order, but the following are the general requirements you’ll need to meet to qualify.

How to qualify

In order to qualify for the Farm Bureau good student discount, you must be at least 16 years old and enrolled full-time as a high school or college student
You must have a B average or better (or a 3.0 GPA or higher) in order to claim the discount. And don’t worry if taking AP Chemistry completely derailed your last semester’s GPA: Farm Bureau will look at your cumulative transcript, so one bad grade won’t pull the rug out from under you.
You will need to prepare your transcript and have it signed by a school official. It gets a little harrier if you’re homeschooled, since you may not have a traditional transcript. In that instance, you would need to take a standardized test like the SAT or ACT, score in the top 20%, and send your score to Farm Bureau. Your agent should be able to walk you through the steps if you need guidance.

How long does Farm Bureau’s good student discount last?

Unfortunately, you can’t ride this gravy train forever. But as long as you are still in school and you maintain the right GPA, you can claim Farm Bureau’s good student discount until you turn 25

Why do auto insurers offer good student discounts?

Sure, getting an A+ in trigonometry or social studies may not translate to being a great driver. After all, what does naming the capital of every state or being able to solve an advanced calculus problem set have to do with driving?
Good student discounts are a lesson from insurance providers about responsibility. As we mentioned earlier, insurance companies use their own algorithms to
calculate your premium
based on how “risky” you are to insure. Earning good grades demonstrates an ability to follow directions and meet deadlines—meaning you may be more likely to follow the rules of the road and less likely to miss a car insurance payment.

The best Farm Bureau insurance discounts for students

Even if your grades aren’t the best—or if you’re looking for additional areas where you could save—there are still plenty of
car insurance discounts
you can redeem for some money back each month. Here are the best ones that Farm Bureau offers for young drivers and students:

Safe young driver discount

You may qualify for a Farm Bureau safe young driver discount if:
  • You are under the age of 25
  • You have a valid driver’s license or permit
  • You are a rated driver on at least one vehicle insured on a Farm Bureau Member’s Choice plan
  • You meet Farm Bureau’s personal driving record and claims standards within the past three years
  • You watch an approved safety video with your insurance agent
  • You log 30 hours of supervised driving
  • You sign a driver safety pledge
Although this one can be applied for at any time, it’s a great option if you’ve still got your learner’s permit and need an adult with you in the car.

Multi-car discount

If you’re a student or if you live at home, this is one to maybe ask your folks (or primary policyholder) about. In the name of customer loyalty, Farm Bureau offers discounts to customers who add multiple vehicles to their policy.

Driveology discount

Driveology is Farm Bureau’s usage-based insurance discount program that tracks your good driving habits. Once you plug a small device into your car, you’ll be able to monitor your driving behavior through the Driveology app.
And safe driving can help you save big! Over time, you can qualify for a SafeRide Rewards discount of up to 30%. An additional plus: installing Driveology can also help you locate your car—something we’ve all needed a hand with in a crowded grocery store or sports arena parking lot.
If you’re interested in enrolling, you’ll need to contact your Farm Bureau insurance agent to order the device and get started on the saving process. And, once you enroll, you can also qualify for the Driven to Safety discount on top of that.

Low mileage discount

If you’re only driving your car to school and back (and don’t have any major road trips on the horizon), you may qualify for a low mileage discount, which is available if you drive less than 7,500 miles annually

Claim-free discount

With Farm Bureau, it clearly pays to
drive safely
and maintain a
clean driving record
. If you go accident- and claim-free for a certain period of time, you can earn money back on your premium.  You’ll need to double-check with your insurance agent about its availability, however, as the discount varies on a state-by-state basis.
Jerry
was spot on. I’m young with one rear end on my record. Still, they dropped my monthly insurance rate from $468 to $250. This really saved me money.” —Jason M.
